...  it has a profound and lasting positive effect on me and how I now relate to others ...

Rather than being reactive, there could be an organic explanation for long-lasting changes in personality following a near death experience.
Brain injury, (through lack of blood supply), can cause euphoria (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/25/fashion/25brain.html),  exaggerated emotional responses (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emotional_lability), including exaggerated empathy.

So someone who has had the blood supply to their brain cut off for a period , could become happier & friendlier as a result.

And he could become much more aggressive unlikable and remote a hateful misogynist!

Equally true, (but you didn't report socially unacceptable changes in behaviour).

But whether the personality change is viewed as positive or negative, the changes after a NDE are explainable as neurological damage, rather than a reaction to their extreme experience.

There is a huge part of the experience I left out,  because I do not want to subject myself to Unpleasant remarks by the sceptics?

I suffered no neurological damage and it is possible to explain away anything?

However, I do not accept this that my case was caused by a brain in distress, because brain damage would not make me into a kinder more spiritual person or lead me an atheist into a profound belief and knowledge of the existence of God and the continuation of life after death.

Brain damage does not fill ones mind with awe, beauty and a love so deep and so profound that it defy' s human explanation.  Brain damage does not result in an increase in clarity of thought and an increase in the capacity to learn, understand and absorb new things.

Why people always insist there is a mundane material answer for everything under the sun beats me, we are much more than wet bags of protoplasm waiting for entropy to consume our dying bodies. The body is the temporary clothing of the mind/soul which we discard after death.

If you were looking for supernatural explanation this is wrong forum.

So you speak for the entire forum and and assume the presumptuous authority to prevent me from suggesting that there might just be another explanation, for what I experienced, other than the one you insist on? Never my friend never!

We are all aware that yesterdays magic often become today's scientific fact. If for instance you had, hypothetically, pulled out a cell phone in the middle ages , let the people observe those trapped inside it moving about (Skype), you would have been burned at the stake as an evil wizard!

Consciousness exactly where it is located and how it really works is still a mystery to be solved by science, my experience was that of an altered state of consciousness, "so stop trying to reduce it to a silly joke!"

There is no need to resort to the supernatural to explain the phenomena associated with NDEs,  such as OOBEs (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Out-of-body_experience) , bliss & oneness, as the same phenomena are caused by brain injuries, and drugs such as ketamine (http://www.wired.com/2011/02/ketamine-drug-hallucinations/).

...  what I experienced ...
A NDE is going to be the most profound experience anyone is going to have, so not a joking matter, but it's not evidence of consciousness being separate from the brain/body.

Consciousness exactly where it is located ... is still a mystery to be solved by science ...

Inserting objects in peoples brains has confirmed the location is definitely between the ears ...

It is not a figment of imagination nor is Alan "crazy" or damaged (brain death.) Hundreds of thousands of people alive today, millions in history, have had similar experiences. These can also be produced through meditation.

SEE: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cosmic_Consciousness

The book is over 125 years old and i still in print. Why would this be if not for an astounding interest  for the subject? Or a whole lot of people experiencing i, including myself.

I'm not by any means crazy and put my faith in Shakespeare:  "There is more under heaven and earth than is dreamed of in our Philosophy, Horatio."  - aprox quote.

What I write below is subjectively true and I am not trying to make a case out of proving whether there is an existence after our mortal bodies perish. It is simple; I saw what I saw and it has a profound and lasting positive effect on me and how I now relate to others

The night my heart stopped and I flat-lined

Hello everyone please read this updated, edited version, which better describes what happened to me night my heart stopped beating in 2011

On the night of  18th, August 2011 at approximately 9.30 pm, my heart stopped beating numerous times, both at home and later on the  Hospital resuscitation table.

On resuscitation table due to third stage or total, AV heart block. I went through the whole drama of my heart stopping, flat- lining over and over again, adrenaline, atropine were injected directly into my heart and the shock paddles and chest depressions used over and over again in a desperate effort to get my heart to beat again on its own without  help.

I had taken a nap on that Thursday night, and a dear friend of mine, Tony Martin was somehow moved to phoned late at night, a thing he had never done before.

I woke up with the phone ringing due to his call, with great fear because my heart was reacting in a manner that I had never experienced until that moment, it was going heart crazy in my chest hesitating then beating and then, almost stopping completely,

I cried out to my daughter Desiree for her to get my wife to phone for an ambulance

My wife immediately called the for the ambulance and they got to my home in ten minutes. The hospital is less than a half kilometre from my home and I got there in five minutes and when I arrived, expert medical attention was immediate.

Note! If my n friend of some thirty-five years, Tony Martin, had not phoned, from the town of George in South Africa to Johannesburg some thousand miles away, at the exact moment he did, I would never have woken up and would have died in my sleep.

I am sure God moved Tony that night to  phone me when he did, which for him was a very unusual hour at about 9 pm. Tony never phones me so late at night and maybe he can explain what made him call me or why he was moved to call me at that exact moment in  time.

His phone call woke me up from a deep sleep from which I would not have awakened and from I would have died in my sleep, because I was unaware in my sleeping state the fact that my heart was going wild in my chest, a somnambulist battle of life or death

Tony could hear over the phone that there was something really wrong going on which me. He said over the phone “Alan McDougall you don’t sound right, are you OK?’ I replied “No”!! “Tony something is very wrong” “you phone back a little later”.

I put down the phone and could feel my heart actually vibrating in a frightening way, it would stop completely and I would lose consciousness for a while, and then regain awareness, but not know where I was, or who I was, as I struggled to survive, during this frightening life or death episode.

I became ghastly pale and started to sweat profusely. I did not realise at this stage know how very close to death I came that night.
It is very scary when I looked at wife or daughter and saw them actually becoming dimmer and dimmer in my eyes because my brain was being deprived of oxygen.

It was then that I began then to move in and out of consciousness on the very edge of death.

At the hospital, my blood pressure reading was zero.

I saw my daughter Desiree in the passage and called out weakly for her to tell my wife Denise, that I was having a heart attack. I do not think my wife believed me, but after looking at me with my face which now looked like death and sweating body, she called the ambulance, which most fortunately to my survival reached our home in less than ten minutes. (South Africa's 911)

I now entered a life-threatening desperate state of AV heart block (stopping and starting) I recall very little of what happened to me that night, because I had begun to go in and out of consciousness, until I finally became fully conscious the next morning with a temporary heart pacemaker installed in my heart to keep me alive.

I had to wait a day or two in the hospital for Doctor Rodney King Cardiologist, to get my medical aid to agree to the fitting of a permanent heart pacemaker, under my skin in my chest wall. This pacemaker cost about sixty thousand South African Rand or about nine thousand American (USA) dollars.

I only conscious of a just a little of what was going on in those three hours that the team of committed doctors who refused to give up on me in the very difficult task of restoring my heart beat and save my life This was a battle of life or death

However, I have lately  begun to remember more and more about some rather odd things I saw and heard while on the resuscitation table that night.

Denise, my wife was kept in the dark by the medical staff and did not know until the next morning how really sick her husband has been or that he had metaphorically knocked on the gates of death, survived to live again, hopefully, many more years as husband and father to his children.

Over the period of three hours, each time my heart stopped and I  flat-line, I went somewhere, not of this world and each time the emergency team of doctors at the Hospital battled to got my heart to beat  Each time it stopped I subjectively went into a comfortable dark void for an eternity and I came back. an objective few seconds later

Each time my heart stopped I seem to  go away for an eternity to elsewhere, but when they started it up again, I returned to life from this elsewhere seemingly in contrast, without even the smallest moment of time passing.

I remember being vaguely aware and conscious of what was going on around me. But kept going in and out of consciousness during the continual attempts at resuscitation.

The team of doctors and nursing assistants were desperately trying to get a needle into one of my veins. I have very poor veins and they are fairly deep under my skin and difficult to locate. Later back in the emergency care ward after I finally became fully conscious I noticed that both my arms and hands were full bruises and needle pricks.

It took  three hours of effort on the on the resuscitation table before the doctors were able to installed a temporary pacemaker to maintain my pulse between 65/110 beats per/minute, instead of the zero to 15 it had been beating/not beating most of the time.

I heard them call for atropine and adrenaline, which they injected directly into my heart. When even this did not keep my heart beating as it should, the electric paddles were used to shock my heart and get it beating as it should.

On my return to the emergency ward, I noticed both sides of my chest, ribs, or torso were very painful to touch as it hurt to breathe for a day or two after the event.

The doctor said if I had arrived hospital even five minutes later it would have been impossible to revive me. I am 75+ years of age now and would not have minded if I had died then, but I suppose there must be some reason for me to carry on with life or activities yet to do because it is true that a whole lot of favourable coincidences came together to make it possible for me to survive, what should have been impossible to survive under any other circumstances.

I was told by one of the doctors that I had been “really really dead”. He stressed that if I had arrived at the hospital even five minutes later it would have been impossible to revive me.

I am 75+years of age now and would not have minded if I had died then, but I suppose there must be some things left for me to do because a whole lot of favourable coincidences made it possible for me to survive.

I really came as close to death that night as possible, without actually dying, and was fortunate enough to be brought back to quality life by a great team of doctors, to live again and be with my family and friends a little longer.

In fact, since the heart pacemaker was fitted I have felt healthier and maybe the heart irregularity was a long-standing problem of which I was unaware.

I vaguely remember being on the table with people pricking me with needles all over, my arms and hands.

Because I was continually being revived by the medical team , I floated in and out of consciousness, into the Other-World realms and then back to this one the resuscitation table, this continued until  my heart was fully supported by the doctors, who had managed to get my heart to beat with a temporary heart pacemaker.

Afterlife

I had no tunnel or meeting of a being of light, which is usual for the near death experience. I went directly into a gloomy large dark cave and saw countless people sitting in the dark gloom.

There was some enormous evil entity, so pitch black that it seemed like tar and did not reflect any light.

Only later when I saw the Golden Light that I thought might be Jesus as he approached the dark entity, it shrank away from him. Was this dark entity Satan the Devil?

If I had any doubts about life after death I have none now, each time my heart stopped my soul or consciousness left my body and went into other dimensions of existence.

When I was elsewhere on the other side in some dimension or the other, I saw a huge tree with a large number of books all around its huge trunk.

In my opinion, this great tree was the "Tree of Knowledge ?

Just by attempting to read what was on the covers of those books, it was somehow brought to my understanding that within them, were all the answers to all my questions I had pondered over most of my life

These books seemingly  contained within them all the knowledge, wisdom and mysteries of existence.

Among the many books, was very much larger one, much larger than the other rest which was scattered randomly around the huge trunk of this beautiful tree. I assume the very large book was a consolidation of all that was in all the smaller books.

When I tried to lift the large book, I found  it was much too heavy for me to carry, so I decided to leave it there under the tree and return later for it.

Maybe when I finally do die in totality and go to heaven, I will go back to that beautiful tree and retrieve this book which I think might the "The book of Knowledge"

During the moments that I flat-lined, I went somewhere outside of this earthly dimension into strange places outside of three-dimensional space and time as we know it is the physical universe.

I walked through a doorway of sorts and saw numerous people gathered apparently to welcome me into the afterlife.

I did not recognise any of them, maybe because the scenario too fleeting and was over in less than a blink of an eye.

Maybe they were some of my beloved passed over family members or friends,  but I cannot say what I saw was factual or not. However, what the were gathering for seemed to be was some sort of a welcome home party or  wedding reception.

Although not in this particulates event, I thought about my beloved Dog Bully who had died fifty years prior and remembered the many dreams I had when I felt his loving doggy presence.

When on the other side of life I also one saw a beautiful pulsating sphere of golden light that I took for the loving  Spiritual Essence of the Lord Jesus, because to me it is only he who can emanate perfect  peace and love.

I now have a permanent pacemaker in my chest which should last another six years and despite the great shock, I got that night, I am feeling much better and very alive and well.

Note; the medical term for what happened to me is Total AV heat block.

The Truth remains the Truth regardless of our beliefs our opinions the Truth is always the Truth even if we know it or do not know it (The Truth remains the Truth)

Sometimes the Truth is surrounded by a circumference of lies and deception, but even then the Truth remains the Truth unchanged by anything.

Jesus stood before Pontius Pilot who asked him "What is Truth'? Not knowing the very essence of Truth Stood in front of him.

Pilot washed his hands and gave up Jesus to the mob, now he has to wash his hands forever in hell!

THANK YOU ALAN FOR SHARING YOUR EXPERIENCE, AND LIKE YOU AND JIM BOB, I TOO HAVE HAD a NDE...as a child and adult.

I still will be sitting or doing something when I am suddenly taken aback as if it were happening again, and besides  the few similarities, I felt myself move up from my body, and felt as if I was hovering over myself, and several others in the rogom ! I am still aware of what Is happening with everyone in room, their ongoing  conversations continue,  but when this happens now,  and it still does... thats when I relive the NDE.

I felt ascention and an incredibly bright light that seemed blinding, but it wasnt, it was a pure, warm bright light. As I moved upward I could see hands, outstrtched an welcoming. The voices of loved ones the feelings of their presence, without the visualization of their faces. It was just the knowledge in my own heart and mind of who they were. Then I heard  a very masculine, but gentle voice saying, that I had things left unfinished, things to do, and I needed to go back. The light on my face and body felt like a gentle hand on my cheek...Then  a slow steady descending feeling came over me, and again the I was seeing the most brilliant light, and hearing the gentle voice which seemed farther away now,  but still clear! ....It is my very first memory of my life... Its the earliest memory I have, and it left me with an undoubting knowledge of the presence of Jesus, or if you will, others might prefer a higher being...A knowledge that no matter what kind of scientific types of explanations I tried to assign to the events, it always comes down to undeniable knowledge that I have of a higher power..for me Jesus. There are even at times when I am in  depression and sickness, that life has made me doubt that presence.... but,  that is is when something happens and I reexperience the ascending sensation and can again find myself looking down from above myself! Its definitely OOB experience and my spirit if you will leaves the shell below, and I can feel my own being or spirit above myself, as if shedding my body below, but taking all else above....Then I hear that same voice and sink quietly back into the place I left. I cannot explain why, and I won't argue it with anybody,  but I will tell you that it is a very sacred, private memory, and experience for me. I only share it on occasion like this, because you are not alone..and while we share similarities, I think each persons experience is different...and that its not a debaitable event! Even though 1 person experiences it one way, we need to remember that we are each very individual in our personalities, as well as how we experience physical and spiritual events that we have! ...Its like  having a heart attack.  There are similarities about symptoms, but also differences in how each of us experience the heart attack... I have had 3 as a infant, and another 3 as an adult....each one different as for the physical pain for me...

I have an incredible love for life, and love of people. A knowledge of where I will be after this life, and no fear of death itself... My worries come from thinking about going without my children... being without them even though I know I will see them again, it bothers me... I assume time here  will go slowly, but it will be the blink of an eye for me... so I worry for them and for me not being ready to let go of them long enough to move on.

I must sound like a nut to you but I believe what you experienced was very real, and most importantly you know it was, and it does not matter what anyone else thinks, or believes...  You know in your heart and You know its undeniable, no doubts for you..  I believe you were blessed by the knowledge, and not many people get that blessing,  and they go through their life looking for the knowlede of weather there is or isnt truth in a higher spirit or Jesus, but you found a truth in your experience...We are lucky...but mostly blessed!

Thank you, Keren,

I was not aware of your response to my thread I did not get a notification in my email inbox. The Being you saw was indeed the Lord Jesus Christ because only he emanates perfect love and leaves you changed for the better for the rest of your life.

I find the mockery of this real experience hurtful but nevertheless, it is true and Jesus is Lord of all creation.

Much Love to you Karen!

Uncle Alan (To you only my dear one!)

I do not mean to mock, but why is it that Jesus Christ only appears in NDEs to people who have heard of him before? Why do people in other cultures have these experiences with other divine figures?

It's this kind of phenomena, along with the fact that religious belief depends largely on where one was born, that makes it look like religion and its content are merely the product of the human imagination.

And that would be fine, except that people like to kill and hurt other people on the basis of their religion.

I ask physbang where you found an NDE account with other gods? I have pondered them for ten years and not found any such, except for black men like in the above NDE which take Hindus to a judge, who finds the right named person, but the wrong one of two. They then come back to life. And they consider the spirits to be gods.

In near-death.com and NDERF I have not found other gods, and in the Jewish NDE God was so far in the distance behind people and events and places that there was no perception of God.

Brain and mind are one, so euphoria in the mind is matched with endorphins in the brain.
There is a science book, Irreducible Mind and others also recommended by Dr Eben Alexander. That may help Alan.

I identify the messengers seen in some Hindu NDEs as "divine", even if they are not "gods".

I see similarities in many cultural NDE's and I agree with what you have noticed..I think the experiences are VERY INDIVIDUAL.... as to weather everyone sees there experience as being with God..or Jesus or any higher power for that matter....  Its very indivdual...

I had an earlier near death experience long ago (1990) while in a coma (My Comment Alan)

Most NDEs are felt as peaceful and loving, but some are disturbing. Each near-death experience is unique, but as a group NDEs display common features.

Intense emotions: commonly of profound peace, well-being, love; others marked by fear, horror, loss

A perception of seeing one's body from above (called an out-of-body experience,  or OBE), sometimes watching medical resuscitation efforts or moving instantaneously to other places

Rapid movement through darkness, often toward an indescribable light
A sense of being "somewhere else," in a landscape that may seem like a spiritual realm or world

Incredibly rapid, sharp thinking and observations

Encounter with deceased loved ones, possibly sacred figures (the Judges, Jesus, a saint) or unrecognized beings, with whom communication is mind-to-mind; these figures may seem consoling, loving, or terrifying

A life review, reliving actions and feeling their emotional impact on others

In some cases, a flood of knowledge about life and the nature of the universe

Sometimes a decision to return to the body

The same elements appear in both pleasant and disturbing near-death experiences, but with different emotional tones. PMH Atwater, one of the most prolific NDE researchers, in her book Coming Back to Life, described a peaceful experience this way:

A sensation of floating out of one's body. Often followed by an out-of-body experience where all that goes on around the "vacated" body is both seen and heard accurately.

Passing through a dark tunnel. Or black hole or encountering some kind of darkness. This is often accompanied by a feeling or sensation of movement or acceleration. "Wind" may be heard or felt.

Ascending toward a light at the end of the darkness. A light of incredible brilliance, with the possibility of seeing people, animals, plants, lush outdoors, and even cities within the light.

Greeted by friendly voices, people or beings who may be strangers, loved ones, or religious figures. Conversation can ensue, information or a message may be given.

Seeing a panoramic review of the life just lived, from birth to death or in reverse order, sometimes becoming a reliving of the life rather than a dispassionate viewing.

The person's life can be reviewed in its entirety or in segments. This is usually accompanied by a feeling or need to assess loss or gains during the life to determine what was learned or not learned. Other beings can take part in this judgment like process or offer advice.

A reluctance to return to the earthplane, but invariably realizing either their job on earth is not finished or a mission must yet be accomplished before they can return to stay.

Warped sense of time and space. Discovering time and space do not exist, losing the need to recognize measurements of life either as valid or necessary.

Disappointment at being revived. Often feeling a need to shrink or somehow squeeze to fit back in to the physical body. There can be unpleasantness, even anger or tears at the realization they are now back in their bodies and no longer on "The Other Side."

Whether the NDE was beautiful or terrifying, near-death experiencers commonly say it was unlike a dream, "more real than real," the most powerful event in their lives. They struggle to find words to describe it, but insist they now know something new about reality, that "there's more than what's here" (in the physical world). Most feel deeply changed in their attitudes toward life, work, and relationships.

After a wonderful NDE, people almost always report losing their fear of death and believing that the essential purpose of human life is to develop our capacity to love.

After a disturbing NDE , a person will almost always look for an explanation for having had the experience; because many interpret it as a threat or warning, they may try to change habits or behaviors, or to take up a new religious practice, hoping to avoid a recurrence. However experiencers adjust to these personal transformations, they often have difficulty finding someone they trust to tell about the event. They usually feel in great need of information and support.

I identify the messengers seen in some Hindu NDEs as "divine", even if they are not "gods".
To Hindus they are gods, but this has a different meaning to the self existent, omniscient, omnipotent, omnipresent, benevolent Christian God. Except for the first Hindu god, Purusha.

I have had a lifetime of spiritual experiences and I try to explain how they work. The simple solution is for a single light speed universe. the soul of man exists in radiated energy. this provides us with 3 brains. We have an inner brain and an outer brain which are both chemical. then we have a radiated brain in gravitational waves. this interconnects us with others and places us in contact with the Earth God. this level of God is heterogeneous and contains the gods of all species. The human God contains the various gods of the religions of man. Moses and Jesus are part of the memory of the Jewish and Christian Gods. there are thousands of different sections of the Gods of man.
A Christian in death will find that he still lives although his body has been shut down. He will reach out for existence and see the light of his God. the same is true of all the people. the Atheist will see the light of the Earth God collective. some people will only find darkness and their soul will perish quickly.
In life we reach out to others. Through our spiritual mind energy from us flows outward and this will be picked up by others. Thus spiritually sensitive people may come to our rescue. The data goes from our mind to our spiritual mind and then through gravitational waves to the receptor.
Many people are not spiritually sensitive and they will not believe such things. All they care about is the physical world. Yet the physical world is only part of the total world.

Jerrygg38...You have a very unique view of life and after...tc.. May I ask what you do for a living..or did....I am a very spiritual person with a stong christian background. I have been pronounced dead 5 times in my life and had 5 heart attacks 1 heart failure from anesthesia overdose.....my first experiences were being brought back 3 times during heart attacks as a small child..... the third event was called and surgery stopped I was pronounced dead..and being taken down to hospital morgue when an orderly saw I was moving.....and turned the gurney back and ran me back up to surgery so I was told...I was 1 year old..the memory I have as a first memory occured as far as I can tell at that time..... as far as the subsequent events one happened after a heart attack as adult and  the other after a recent cancer surgery  in 2015...when a accdental anesthesia accident stopped my heart during my partial mastectomy.....The difference being When experiencing the last two.... there were people ls presences who had not passed at infancy but they while I was an adult.....i felt these as new presences during the newest experiences... It was weird because the memories of the experience did not accurr immediately after surgery it was not til hours later that I was remembering but The anesthesia was massive ovedose..... the whole experience felt more defined and less confusing as an adult...I had a much clearer understanding this time.......
