Hey Vincent Marcus I usually don't recommend people to get off of anti-depressants even though they have done nothing good for me. I have been on Effexor and that is the only antidepressant(tried 7 to see if they'd actually do anything) besides Paxil's  anhedonia effect that I felt anything and it was a horrible experience!. I felt initially a little more energetic and outgoing, but then I started experiencing horrible side effects.I experienced intense agitation and rage, something I had never experienced before. That drug made me highly impulsive and overreact to everything.Trust me I know . I put two loaded 22 rifles and a shotgun to my head while on that drug and came very close to pulling the triggers of these firearms with the safeties off and killing myself.I've never felt mania before until I was on  Effexor and I've never taken any steps even close to killing myself before this drug or since I've been off it over 10 years ago,and I've experienced a lot worse that what I was experiencing at the time.I would talk to your psychiatrist about other options if you start feeling like you need to take drastic measures(ie castrating yourself).Effexor from what I have read has been known to create strong bipolar symptoms in certain people who never even manifested  biploar symptoms before. It also from at least my experience brutally hard o get off of because of the discontinuation syndrome.I had the worst(negligent) psychiatrist as he kept upping the dose when I told him I was experience horrible  symptoms which were related to Effexor, and that's when I nearly killed myself.Hopefully you have a competent psychiatrist who can adjust your dose or help you get off Effexor altogether.

Hang in there buddy we are all going through this together. Your'e still young with you're whole life ahead of you, and at least you have this forum with supportive people who understand what your going through with Pois since we all are going through it together.I wish I had this forum when I was younger it would have made things a lot easier knowing I wasn't going through this alone and there are supplements I can take to reduce my symptoms.

.Stress increases the symptoms of allergies. So, stress increases Pois.

.Stress increases the cortisol levels and so has a negative effect on   testosterone and other hormones levels.
 Not more.

I found Victor very cool in the video with an excellent self-control.

True, stress does increase inflammation(allergies)and cortisol. It also makes Pois worse, but as I said in my opinion (or hypothesis) a stressor which could be from an illness, is the (possibly) initial trigger for the body to create a negative response after having an O. Something had to set things in motion in my case for me to experience POIS or I would have had Pois at the the age of 15 when I first had an O.That something, in my own personal experience, however had nothing to do with anxiety or in your head syndrome,  as these doctors in the extended interviews suggest. Neither You,I,or anyone on this forum can reasonably suggest anything as a universal affirmative for what causes POIS unless we have multiple, properly done studies that agree on a specific cause.Still, some people may have other reasons for why their bodies respond to an O than other,so there may be a variety of causes.

Also, yes great job Victor,I saw the video, you did a great job and you have a lot more courage than I to show yourself on camera and talk about a very embarrassing condition. You have my greatest respect!

I wouldn't put too much credence on what Dr. Goldmeir and Dr. Kocsis say about Pois being a mental condition. Sure they may be well educated and have many years experience treating patients but how long have they actually treated Pois patients?,The term POIS is a pretty new one,and the understanding of it is still pretty scarce with the obvious lack of studies and research done on this condition. These doctors are making their own hypothesis, and dare I say lack the courage to say  anything other than POIS is a psychological condition without more studies and research being conducted supporting its validity.I can understand that they don't want to look like a laughingstock amongst their peers without  a host of studies showing that Pois is a rare, though real condition, that has serious consequences on  individuals affected by it.

I know its real, because I have it and listing it as a result of anxiety does not make sense. For one,if that were true, a good portion of the world population would be suffering from this malady as anxiety is extremely common while this disease is quite rare. Why wouldn't I have this condition when I was 15 and first started having O's by the  hundreds per year without any consequence whatsoever until I was almost 21?

I had significant bouts of anxiety and depression in high school because I was picked on and bullied, but never once during that time felt the wrath of POIS .I have heard before about illnesses(some very serious) where anxiety is a symptom, and patients have gone to 5 or more different doctors who told them to go on prozac or xanax until they finally had a doctor who gave them a test which validated their real condition which was causing the anxiety. That's why we need to stick to our goal of funding research,I missed the deadline since I haven't been on this site for a while, and I am very cash strapped ,but I will donate at least something to Nord as studies are the only possible way for most of us to reaching a solution to permanently ending this malady. Hopfully in the near future there will be a test or some kind of measure to prove to a doctor what have is not all in our head.

My personal belief is that Pois is a result of some event such as an illness,a major stressor or something of that nature causing the bodies endocrine or immune system to go haywire causing this condition to occur.I don't know why symptoms only happen after orgasm, however, I believe orgasm for some reason triggers the body to overreact into creating a temporary hormonal or immunological imbalance that was first set in motion by an illness, stressor, etc. That's my personal opinion though, and it will always stay as just an opinion until studies say otherwise. Interesting, in my case, is that  I started suffering from Pois  after I put my body through a lot of stress.Work and school were going great, but I was doing those full time, and decided I wanted to be buff like Arnold.INext thing you know after over-training by spending 2 to 3 hours in the gym a day 5 days a week like what was recommended in Arnold's bodybuilding book, I started developing symptoms of Pois after having an O about six months later. I was starting to feel the exhaustion  and fatigue from the overtraining before I developed Pois, but once I had Pois, the exhaustion became crippling, and I started to develop major brainfog, flu like symptoms after having an O.

That's my story on how I developed POIS, and I wasn't feeling anxious, nervous or depressed before Pois set in.I started to feel very physically tired tired at times before Pois set in,but my self esteem couldn't be higher, as I was getting compliments left and right about how good I was looking after working out from fellow employees as well as customers at the job I was working at the time .To say there was any reason for anxiety at this time is preposterous as my well being and state of mind was very stable before this condition set in

The moral of my ramblings:I don't think we should  give up hope for this condition by paying too much attention to what certain doctors think about our illness.I just got paid today and I'm going to contribute to Nord, its going to have to be a fairly meagre payment unfortunately, but I'm not giving up on finding a way to end this hideous disease. I love this site, and until we have doctors who know how to reliably treat this condition we must be proactive and take steps into out hands.I enjoy reading about people on here who found supplements that helped reduce their symptoms , because it also gives the real possibility it will help others gain relief from POIS symptoms including myself!

I won't go into details, but I also will have on an occasion a milder form of Pois if I watch sexually graphic videos for over a coupe of hours even without having an O.Strangely if I can have the willpower. to watch only a couple hours of these videos I feel a sense of relaxation, and a sense of mild euphoria .If I watch too much I will get strong heart palpitaions, feel very dizzy, moderate fatigue and a general spacyness that lasts for about as long as an O,though as I said the effects aren't nearly as strong as when I have an O. Its almost like I develop a milder version of the effects an O as I feel some of the good things that immediately come after an O such as the euphoria, wellbeing, but then the spaciness ,brainfog, and moodiness come in at a albeit at less intensity.

Pornographic videos have an overall negative effect, and I certainly don't condone or encourage people with Pois watching as it definitely encourages and tempts them to have an O. Unfortunately human beings are very sexual creates and it can be quite hard to resist the sexual urges when they come on

@ Mellivora,

That was an awesome Post! What you said echoes exactly what I want from a Pois free life. It was very uplifting and inspiring to read what you posted. Thank You and very well written!

@Daveman

Alpha Lipoic acid is a potent antioxidant and it has been proved in studies to increase the effects of Acetyl-l-Carnitine when combined. That's why I was using it as part of a combo but perhaps it was helping to much as I started to feel side effects from it.

@ QuestforLife.

You're very Welcome! I love being able to help!

Has anyone taken a supplement that has brought on feelings similar to what you get when your in POIS?  I have been experimenting again with different supplements and yesterday I took Alpha Lipoic Acid.  This stuff really sets me back which is strange as it was a low dose.  The symptoms I get with it appear within the hour and last for about 24 hours. They are very similar symptoms to my POIS:
Very poor co-ordination
Derealization
extremely poor lack of concentration / cognitive
Joint aches
Facial Muscles pain which effect my facial expressions / talking etc (this is my most unbearable POIS symptom which comes around straight after an O)

I thought it was strange how a supplement can bring on such similar symptoms and thought maybe there was a relationship between it.  Other supplements do make me feel much better and so I convinced there must be a chemical/neuro imbalance that is extremely sensitive.

Are you taking an Alpho Lipoic acid/Acetyl-l- Carnitine Combo? If you are I would stick with Acetyl-l-carnitine as it is an awesome memory booster and cognitive enhancer for me. Alpha Lipoic acid was starting to make me very edgy so I dropped it. It could be that since Alpha Lipoic Acid is a strong antioxidant it is helping your body purge toxins out of your body at a pretty fast rate.I know not everyone believes  being affected by toxins, but there's toxins everywhere, even in the air we breath which often contains pollutants from vehicles etc.

I Respect the doctor you are to yourself!

Thanks,I've went the whole Primary doctor route and realized that I was wasting my money and time without getting anywhere. I realized I'm far more effective doctor to myself then someone who has such time constraints that they can't even listen to you for more than 5 minutes. Most Doctors at least Primary ones have little training in nutrition or supplementation,in fact they often think supplements are more harmful than prescription drugs. Its really, in most cases, only the  poor manufacturing process(quality control) by an unreliable supplement company that causes harmful side effects  approaching anywhere near prescription drug side effects.

POISon,

That's exactly what the surveys are going to be all about!
ted.

Awesome! I just completed mine. I echo demografx's thanks on your part for helping surveys get started!

It looks like not everyone has problems with hot showers, it seems like some even enjoy them. I read about chlorine being a possible problem as well as manganese which can cause brain damage if inhaled  from the steam that hot showers/baths produce. I still think my body is just overreacting to the heat. Hot showers feel so addictingly good(especially in the winter) while I'm taking them only to feel like hell when I'm out of the shower for up to a week. I thought about trying  the filters, but the chance they don't work, and I feel miserable again is enough for me to just stick with tepid or even cold.

Same issue here! I also cannot tolerate very hot showers. They normally make me feel very foggy / lethargic the entire day.

Same here!!

We may be on to something.I thought about mentioning my intolerance for hot showers when I first went on this site over a year ago,but I thought it may be just me on here that had this problem and it may not be related to POIS for most people here since I couldn't find anyone else mentioning the same problem. Glad to know I'm not alone! Whats odd is that being out on a very hot day for hours doesn't seem to be much a problem for me,but taking a 10 minute hot shower can make me miserable for days after. I'd be curious to know how many people on this forum have Pois and sensitivity to Hot showers/bath.If the majority do, this information might be of great value once we get the funds for Nord to do research.

@ Porke,
I usually get a horrible sore throat, severe fatigue, chest pains, brainfog, dizziness, heat flashes, extreme calm followed by anxiety, and muscle spasms, especially in the upper arm area after a hot shower. I think in our cases they are related. My theory is that heat and POIs trigger an immune response which triggers an over/under reaction of the HPA axis.People on this site may have different reasons, however for the way they act after having an O,since every bodies system is different. I'll have to take a look at that Myhill site, looks pretty interesting.

@ Habibou and people wishing to try Acetyl-L-Carnitine(Alcar)

I bought Swanson's premium brand 500 milligram Acetyl-l-carnitine and their Alpha Lipoic acid in the 600 mg.I would probably have gone with the 300 though since the 600 seems to strong. I'm not a rep nor do I own stock in Swansons, though I probably should since I buy so much from them, but they are usually the cheapest and also the best quality. Believe it or not, buying the right brand can mean  the difference between not noticing any effect, having side effects,or actually producing the positive effects you're looking for.

Once you start feeling a difference with the Alpa Lipoc and Acety-l-Carnitine combo you may find yourself wanting to drastically lower the dose of the Alpha  Lipoic acid or drop it completely and stick with just the Alcar. Thats what I'm doing right now and its working better for me since the Alpha Lipoic acid over time was adding agitation.I think once the body has accumulated enough Alcar in the bloodstream increasing its effect too much by continuing with the Alpha Lipoic acid will start to cause side effects such as moderate agitation.Again, that's my experience and everyone's body is different.

POIson does this work with all your cognitive symptoms? Does it help fatigue at all?

interesting here that Acetyl-L-Carnitine is said to reduce HPA axis hyperactivity although this isn't the most scientific looking website. We've had a few discussions about HPA-axis in the past I think

Yes, Acety-L-Carnitine is definitely helping my cognition and energy. I can remember things much better as well as get things done because I have the energy and focus to do so. I don't think I have taken anything which has made me more motivated to finish things. You may be onto something about the HPA Axis I have read quite a bit about it and at one time even dropped a couple of grand for treatments at a clinic that treated chronic fatigue patients, thinking I had chronic fatigue syndrome. The doctor there said my fatigue had to do with a bacteria attacking my HPA Axis.Never felt worse in my life than going there  as the antibiotic treatments caused all sorts of health issues such as mild seizures that occasionally exist today.

Its highly likely a virus or a stressful experience caused havoc on my HPA axis or immune symptoms making me overreact to having an O which my body somehow takes as a threat . The other strange thing is I can't tolerate hot showers or baths. If I take a very hot shower its like POIS(similar symptoms) 2x or more for at least a week. Originally though i might have MS,but not all the symptoms match, and that's pretty much a dead end anyway as far as treatment goes,so I'm hoping if I just stay away from hot baths, and take supplements such as Acetyl-L Carnitine to help Pois I can at least live a tolerable life, if not an entirely enjoyable one.

Also, thanks for providing those links, very interesting.I've seen quite a few controlled studies on the net where it has been proven over placebo, that Acetyl-L-Carnitine causes significant increases in cognition, energy, and mood.I saw one that states that it appears that it creates neurogenesis which is creation of new brain cells,so if true that is very intriguing also.

Interesting that people mentioned krill oil. Vitacost brand was by far the most effective for me,though ironically lowest amount of Epa and Dha compared to the others. The other brands just made me feel very drowsy while I felt more more mentally alert and focused while on the Vitacost brand as well as being in a far better mood. Interesting fact is that my libido seemed to skyrocket initially while on it and then it just tanked. I had no feeling for women whatsoever which is good in a sense in that I had no desire to "choke the chicken" so to speak.Unfortunately the downside of this is that it will obviously screw up your relationships with women. I don't want to be lonely the rest of my life.

I've gone off Krill oil since I found Acetyl -L- Carnitine an antioxidant, which actually help increase fatty acid metabolism in the brain without destroying libido. In fact I relate far better with women on it(and people in general) and my mild social anxiety is also pretty nonexistant since it has a calming effect while also helping me with verbal skills. The only side effect I've experienced is sometimes it makes me feel a little too confident, like I can conquer the world which happens I think if I take too much.I've never been good with taking required supplement doses, because if I'm feeling really good I want too take more and feel great, which as a result will often cause the reverse of what I was hoping for. This supplement has definitely helped me,hoping it helps someone else so I look forward to seeing a post where someone benefited from it.Its not a cure, but it does lessen the effects of an O,and the day after an O symptoms are markedly reduced.By the third day(sometimes second) after O all my symptoms are gone, whereas before I could feel negative effects for about a week and a half after an O

Cheers,
Matt

I see a lot of people on here mentioning how niacin has helped them.I had both positive and negative effects with it,but I eventually had to quit do t the negative side effects.I used to take 5 hour energy drinks all the time, and noticed that  niacin was listed as an ingredient. I felt those drinks were very helpful in giving me energy after an O as well helping clear the brain fog. 5 hour energy was great for a while until I noticed after a year of taking it I was getting dots which looked like acne, but only smaller all around my face. It was so bad it was leading to scarring.Figured out the repeated niacin flushes were causing these bumps Guess it has to do with to Rosacea. Anyways(except for permanent scarring) that stopped as soon as I stopped taking them. So warning to people with sensitivity to rosacea when taking niacin. I've read that niacin is more dangerous to the liver than other vitamins so that's also something to be cautious about.

I haven't read yet of anyone taking Acetyl-L-Carnitine,but I have been very pleased after taking it.I was taking it lieu of creatine which was giving me bad side effects for more energetic workouts and was surprised to find  it is helping me tremendously with brain fog and my attention disorders which are made far worse after having an O. My memory is horrible for my age and this supplement is also helping me with that better than any supplement I have taken and I've probably taken hundreds. I'm hoping the effects last since I have only been on this supplement for about 2 months, but so far life and my ability to handle an O have been much easier. I take it with Alpha Lipoic Acid and Biotin which seem to form some sort of synergy in helping Acetyl-L- Carnitine perform its magic better.

Wow that letter is extremely encouraging! When I found this site I think it was about 8 months ago,I read every single page and almost every post.I never thought things would progress so rapidly as they did in the last 6 months.I still recall the post where Nord  recommended we start a fundraiser through a barbecue and invite family and friends for donations.I'm very eager to see TLC's Pois episode, because I have a feeling  many doors are going to be opened concerning funding after that airs.I really respect and admire you for taking the responsibility and initiative in getting a hold of Dr.Waldinger, Nord, and other organizations to see what you could you could do to help raise awareness and funds for research.

@ Animus
Awesome man!You got a lot more guts than I do.I don't think I'd have the balls to be interviewed on T.V for anything let alone discussing my debilitating symptoms after an orgasm. Thanks for stepping up to the plate and doing such a brave deed. This gives an enormous boost to public awareness of POIS!.

I notice a lot of people mention antidepressants.I've been on at least 7 not because I'm some psychotic mess, but because not a one really worked.Only one that helped somewhat was Effexor  initially, but it became like the rest and only good for bringing awful side effect such as throwing up, worse lethargy, and splitting headaches. The only one wished I would have continued trying was Wellbutrin, but I could only stand 3 days of it because of the horrible agitation unlike the normal 6 weeks or more of the others. I think at least in my case and I suspect many others here Pois has a huge effect on dopamine. The only serotonin booster that works for me was mood wise is 5htp,but it made me even more lethargic and spaced out.It only relieves the irritability and sour mood aspect that Pois brings.

I never told my doctor about Pois because I'm sure he would think I was a complete loon.Except for a 3 week trial of Ritalin which worked about as good as a sugar pill, stimulants such as caffeine and herbs such as Siberian ginseng have worked wonders for me.If I haven't been on caffeine awhile it perks my mood, energy and attention way up.The only problem is the tolerance issue comes into effect pretty rapidly.

I've been on a lot of nutritional supplements and some have worked great even if only for a certain period of time.An adrenal extract(Solaray Adrenal Caps) which included Siberian Ginseng and Licorice root was absolutely awesome for me for almost 2 years, and Pois seemed like a thing of the past in that time.In fact people kept telling me my eyes sparkled and I seemed like a different person.Colors were more vibrant, and I was far more outgoing, transitioning from shy to very popular and made friends much easier, especially with the opposite sex.It also made me horny as hell, but It was rarely a problem because I could orgasm up to 8 times a day and not feel any different. It seemed like a miracle cure  besides having the occasional sometimes strong insomnia effect, but unfortunately I began to have strong seizure like episodes with my head jerking violently every time I started to take a nap or was in a relaxed state on the sofa.Scared the hell out of me.It makes me wonder though if like most nutritional supplements that aren't regulated I was ingesting some heavy metals like lead or mercury that either built up in my system from contamination or the last few batches I had were tainted. That's the problem trying to go the supplement route, but if doctors don't know how or are unwilling to treat you, what do you do? I sure as heck am not going to just suffer and do nothing about it.

Edit:What also supports my theory of dopamine is looking at the way I write.Usually it takes me forever to put up a paragraph on the internet and I have to keep changing my sentences, fix a huge amount of spelling errors, and continuously loosing my train of thought.I just took the 5 hour extra that come in the black bottles after being of of it for almost a week and wow I notice the difference in my mental capacity. The tyrosine and caffeine work wonders for my brain on Pois before the tolerance kicks in and the effect eventually becomes next to nill [:(] Sulbutiamine also seems to help  with dopamine, though i don't quite yet understand how it works since accrding to Wiki it has a somewhat confusing effect on dopamine in the prefrontal cortex

Hey everyone,I've been browsing this wonderful forum for about 6 months now and I am glad I found it.I used to think I must be the only one in the world with this cursed affliction until I found this forum. Its nice to know that there are others out there who want to eradicate POIS

I guess I'll tell a little about my POIS story.I'm 31 and have had this ailment since I was 21,so about 10 years. Its strange,I used to masturbate like crazy since I was 15 and only noticed symptoms 6 years later. My symptoms are heavy fatigue, feeling very spacy, irritable and sometimes mild to excessive anxiety.I v'e taking numerous traditional meds and alternative supplements and the the things that help me the most(at least for now) for my cognition and fatigue are the no sugar 5 Hour Energy brand drinks along with 30 mg zinc, sulbutiamine, and omega fish oil.

Like many people here my Pois symptoms are severely reduced after the 3rd or 4th day.For me after a week or so after orgasm I feel completely Pois free.AS many of you realize, its just so darn hard to go through life without eventually succumbing to masturbating or havingsex.Especially sex because then your making the significant other suffer too by depriving them of sex

I'm glad at least that POIS is starting to being taking serious enough now and thanks largely to this site for creating awareness! Its absolutely amazing that this site isn't even 4 years old yet and the BBC and the Learning Channel want to have a Tv interview with members here.I don't think its too far fetched that as a result of this increasing awareness, more funding will be set aside for POIS studies so us suffers will eventually(hopefully very soon) either have a cure or a successful medical treatment to control symptoms.
