I don't know if anyone else wrote the basis of what bitcoins are, but it's simple, in many countries it is illegal to be an unqualified  (more unregistered) "money handler" on behalf of other people with money in the denominator units above coins.
The original creator (thought to be, and declared as deceased) made "bitcoin units" to get around the National  and international legal problem.
So in effect it is a coinage unit economic sum held in an account counted as coins ! (now it does not break the law).

This week I was asked to provide a commentary for the BBC on bitcoin and what this technology means. The peg was the discovery, by rapper 50 cent, of $8 million in bitcoins that he'd lost down the back of his sofa.

In the course of my research on the topic I came across a lot of extremely impenetrable and frankly weak explanations of bitcoin, the underpinning technology, including block chain, and why it exists at all.

I think we can all do much better and provide a really clear and definitive explanation of bitcoin, its inception, operation and future.

It would really help to have a series of questions that we can answer to explain this.

What does it cost to make a bitcoin?

At present, it takes about 1500kWh to commit a block to the blockchain, or about $US200 (depending on your local electricity price).
- Of course, you also need some powerful computer hardware, too, which will add to the cost - maybe $US500 per "win".
- One new block is added about every 10 minutes

At present, you get 12.5 bitcoins for committing a block, so it might cost you perhaps $50 per bitcoin (if you have the latest hardware and cheap electricity)
- If you are using a PC, it will cost far more than that
- But the more bitcoins in circulation, the fewer are paid out to winners.
- Bitcoin is designed with a maximum number of bitcoins that can be "mined" (some of which have been lost, because people threw their old computer out, or forgot their password...)
