Title: what do academics do after leaving academia?
Post by: goodcells on 02/01/2021 19:47:02
Science is a bit of a pyramid scheme, with too many people doing PhDs and higher stages to progress far up the academic career ladder. What successful careers have people had after half a career as an academic?

Lots of fun.

Science in a national laboratory (like a university with no students), engineering in the NHS, research management in the Dept of Health, scientific consultancy, international sales and product development, designing and running private clinics, expert witness and research project refereeing... and I still get to swap Latin puns and hear Anglo-Saxon poetry at the occasional College dinner, without having to counsel weepy undergraduates, mark exam papers, or give the same bloody lecture series for 40 years.

Old academics never die - they just lose all their faculties...
