Title: Micrographs of freshwater invertebrates, Elodea and Celery
Post by: _Stefan_ on 19/04/2007 10:41:54
Hello everyone,

I would like to share with you some photos and videos that I have made of some specimens at school in my biology class.

All photography in these albums is mine.

Photographs and videos of freshwater invertebrate and Elodea specimens as viewed under a light microscope found here. (http://s4.photobucket.com/albums/y123/splendidbetta/BIOLOGY/)

Photographs of celery vascular tissue specimens as viewed under a light microscope, found here. (http://s4.photobucket.com/albums/y123/splendidbetta/BIOLOGY/Eosin%20Celery%20Experiment/)

They were made with a normal light microscope. The camera I used was just a simple Olympus C-480 compact with super macro mode. It was not connected to the light microscope in any way. I simply set up the microscope, adjusted the slide and the magnification, focused on the specimen, got my camera and selected the mode/setting I wanted, then aligned the camera lens with the eye-piece lens of the microscope, and took the shot with a steady hand. No wiring or electronic computer/camera connection to the microscope.

I'm pretty pleased with them, as are my friends and the teacher  [:P]. What do you think of them?

Kindest regards,

Stefan.

Thank you for sharing those with us - I am sure there will be members here who can judge them better than I, but they do look interesting.

Hi Stefan.

love the slides, i tried doing the same thing to get photographs of my slides but they were nowhere near as goos as yours.

i simply used my scanner, to get the image of the slides and used software to enhance the picture.

Seeing as you are into microscopy, i have one quick question: have you ever done slides of diatoms? i have tried but can never get it right  [:(] any ideas?

Thanks for the comments :D

Hi Paul,

I haven't looked at diatoms before. Do you know of a good 'DIY' source? Can they be found in pond water, or can they be cultured like infusoria?

The trick for me was to use super macro setting on the camera, (mine is 4.0 mega pixels), and to make sure the camera was kept steady and for the camera lens to be well aligned with the microscope eye piece. Hope that helps.

I would love to own my own light microscope. How much would a good one cost?

Hi Stefan, yes you can get them from any puddle on the street. They are everywhere! i just dont have the nack for it....

i have a nice stereo microscope, which is ok but i do need a good lightsource. when i get them time i will see about making one. I have no real idea of costs, Ebay do have some good scopes for sale

http://www.microscopy-uk.org.uk/index.html is a site i found really useful, there is also a dedicated micoscope group on yahoo that will be able to offer great advice on scopes http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/Microscope/

Hi Stefan, like the photos.

I have been doing similar with an old Brass Watson microscope circa 1920 that is still working fine.
Same procedure, focusing on the subject then holding the camera in contact with the lens. I have mine on macro but also with 3 x optical zoom as it seems to fit the focal length better. Some nice picture can be taken by downlighting the subject to one side.

Paul, you could build a small cheap light source with high output leds as they work well. You may even cannibalise a cheap led torch to make one.

Mmm, I see a project coming up.  [;D]

Edit: just had a look on the base and it says Watson & son!

could you see your way to two projects?

Two? I'm intrigued.  [;D]

I could do a diy microscope light as I already have the bits for it, something I had already planned.

Here is a picture of mine, a trichome at 60 x, lit from above and to one side by a low energy fluorescent in a desk lamp.

Just reminded me, I need some more slides!

Thanks guys.

Which species is that trichome from?

Hi _Stefan_

Erm, Cannabis Sativa [:I] one of a series of photographs for an article but never published.

Hehe, thats what I thought paul!

Giz a week or so and I'll see what I can knock together. The one I use is just a single led and not enough light for high magnifications. Maplin Electronics has a small high brightness 3 led torch for around 5 euro so I'm going to try and use the bits from that.

Na, I no longer smoke and don't allow smoking in my flat as I like to be active, I think I'd pass out if I did.
It was a comparison of tricomes of different strains, the picture is of the dreaded "superskunk" tricome.

Hahaha! Sorry Paul, some of the photos I have there aren't mine. They're just from websites I've come across. I wish I could get such a good photo as that daphnia with eggs :p

I'll go through my album sometime this week and move all the photos that aren't mine to a different subalbum :)

Hey Paul,

I've moved all the images that I didn't take myself to this folder: http://s4.photobucket.com/albums/y123/splendidbetta/Images%20not%20by%20me/

Some images on my main page aren't by me but they are there for avatar use etc (otherwise URLs are too long).

Were you referring to this photomicrograph (not by me): http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y123/splendidbetta/Images%20not%20by%20me/Miscellaneous/aaDaphnia20with20eggs.jpg

Or to one of these photos by me: http://s4.photobucket.com/albums/y123/splendidbetta/Small%20Aquatic%20Life/?action=view&current=untitled7dc.jpg
