Title: Need help identifying a rock/mineral

Any idea what type of rock/mineral this is?  Thanks for any help!  Chris

First impression is some sort of jasper/jasperoid (cryptocrystalline silica).  Would necessitate a hard tool to make the inscribed symbols though.  Can you scratch it with a knife (try a discrete small area on the back)?
