Title: Do sharks only eat live fish?
Post by: Mariana on 20/02/2019 09:23:27
Jon wants to know:

Do sharks only eat live fish? Or could they be more opportunistic, such that a dead fall would provide reason to linger in an area?

Do you know the answer?

Sleeper sharks have been known to eat dead whales...
See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whale_fall

Many sharks have sensors in their nose to detect electrical activity in muscles, and these sensors would not be triggered by dead bodies - but many sharks are also sensitive to blood, and this would often attract them to dead bodies....

Those looking to catch and/or video sharks often dump dead fish or blood into the water to attract sharks.

Those scents of the recently-dead will attract sharks from a considerable distance.

Sharks are known to be particularly non-picky eaters. There are many reports of sharks found with objects in their stomachs that were never alive (and I don't just mean bits of plastic).

Sharks are opportunistic feeders, but most sharks primarily feed on smaller fish and invertebrates. Some of the larger shark species prey on seals, sea lions, and other marine mammals. Sharks have been known to attack humans when they are confused or curious.

All sharks are carnivorous, meaning that they only eat other animals. The range of prey eaten by sharks is extremely broad, from snails to sea urchins, crabs, fish, rays, other sharks, seals, and birds. Some sharks eat carrion (animals that are already dead), but most only eat live prey.

As I know, the main thing for them is to feel blood.

I think if a fish has recently died and a shark smells it, then it will eat it :-X

I wonder whether there might be some vegetarian sharks, as yet undiscovered.

Such discoveries do crop up.  For example, until fairly recently, we thought that all spiders were carnivores, like sharks

Then a species of vegetarian spider was discovered. Couldn't that happen with sharks?

I asked a local sea food restaurant owner they said yes, apparently Jets prefer them dead. I think the owner was a secretly a jet.

Hey Guys,
I agree with you. It depends on the shark. Normally, sharks prefer to eat live animals (i. e. fish). But there are also sharks that eat carrion (such as the great white shark), so also dead animals.
