Title: Is there a gas that will stop people arguing?
Post by: thedoc on 20/12/2016 05:53:02
Paul Anderson  asked the Naked Scientists:

This is merely daydreaming, but we have had poisonous gas in the World Wars and Agent Orange in Vietnam.

How about developing love dust and then spray it over Israel and Palestine, and any other trouble spots around the world?

Then hopefully folk would become more tolerant and compromising. It could be used in crowd control as well.

Arguing is perfectly OK.  It's only when people start punching each other that the trouble starts.

So wouldn't it be useful to have a kind of selectively-operating gas.   That paralyses fists, but leaves mouths fully, and indeed exuberantly, functional.

Because once most people have fully shot their mouths off at each other, don't they generally quieten down, and become chastened and contrite.  Recognising that there are faults on both sides?

That's equivalent to drugging people against their will in order to force them to behave in a way that you deem acceptable. I have a real problem with such ideas myself.

Most people are so annoying, that it would be a good thing if they could be drugged into peaceful complaisance.

Then us real people could get on with discussing scientific questions.  Let's face it, the majority of the population have absolutely no interest in science.  They're boring.  So wouldn't they be better off if they were peacefully stupified?

I agree. It is criminal to drug people without their clear consent and awareness.

I am heartened to hear people say this- you are completly correct, it is utterly criminal to drug people in such a manner; sadly the security services, and those that control them, do not seem to agree, easy to do and hard to prove. I have often protested this issue and pointed out that China has re-education centers which the west denounces and yet the west has mental hospitals performing the very same function- thanks to drug inducement.

p.s yes and they are not listening to all your conversations either.

A very pungent fart in the middle of a rowdy crowd seems to sort things out.
