We need more not less discussion.
This sounds like the attitude of a:
Quote from: Zer0
Conspiracy Theory Troll who posts Absolute Crap without even a miniscule amount of Evidence

Quite the opposite, discussion allows conspiracies to be proven or disproven. If a suggestion is complete nonsense a discussion can show that.

Trolls generally don't start discussions they generally seek to destroy them

Conspiracy theories, by their very nature, cannot be disproved.

Disagree it depends on the actual conspiracy being suggested. Leaks or the release of internal documents have often proven past conspiracy theories true, as they have also shown them false.

Quote from: evan_au on 13/03/2021 23:36:01
It's always possible for the theorist to invoke excuses (including new conspiracies) to explain away either a lack evidence for their theory (such as, "I can't show the evidence beause it's being suppressed")

Supressed evidence is evidence, that is not the same as no evidence at all. If there is a report that proves something and a government is suppressing the information or stopping the report being made public and there are many examples of that happening in history,  then there is evidence it's just being withheld.

Quote from: evan_au on 13/03/2021 23:36:01
or the presence of evidence against it (such as, "you can't trust that source because it's disinformation to promote their agenda").

Funny both sides use that one.

New Theories / Re: The cytokine storm in covid 19
« on: 14/03/2021 12:33:14 »
Quote from: set fair on 14/03/2021 05:51:09
This is just an idea - it may well be a load of rubbish but there may be something in it.

There are lots of viruses coexisting with us in our bodies. Many seem harmless others beneficial eg they produce useful proteins. All of them, along with the nasty ones have to contend with an immune system trying to eliminate them. There are numerous strategies that they use.

I'll just look at one, which the literature tells us is one of the ones CoV2 uses. A human cell invaded by a virus presents viral proteins on it's surface to attract the attention of white blood cells to its plight. CoV2 codes for a protein which hitches a ride into the nucleus where it downgrades the protein presenting response.

The immune system does encounter the viral proteins after virus particles leave an infected celland from viral proeins secreted from infected cells or released when viral numbers rupture infected cells, so it can fight and eliminate the infection, which is what hapens with most people. But for some, the immune system goes a step further. It's fighting the virus but it can't find infected cells - because they aren't presenting viral proteins on their surface. So cytokines are released to up-regulate the protein presenting mechanism. This is when the trouble starts. Because, among the peacefully cohabiting proteins, there will be plenty which use the same tactic as CoV2 to stay safe. Suddenly their proteins are being presented on cell surfaces and the immune system thinks cells all over the body are under attack by viruses, and the cytokine storm kicks off. What looks like the immune system attacking its own cells in multiple organs is more precisely the immune system attacking some of cells hosting benign viruses.

That's just a likely example, a similar line of reasoning could be used for other anti-immune mechanisms employed by CoV2 such as suppressing interferon production or preventing apoptosis.

cytokine storm is one of the suggested reasons for why the Spainsh flu killed 20 million, during it's second wave.

Plant Sciences, Zoology & Evolution / Re: Why shouldn't we engage in eugenics?
« on: 06/03/2021 02:57:42 »
Quote from: charles1948 on 05/03/2021 19:46:42
Are we engaging in "eugenics" during the present Covid-19 pandemic.

If this pandemic was allowed to run its natural course, what would happen?

Everyone catches the virus.  Then people with "weak" genes , which make them naturally more susceptible to the virus, die.
Whereas people with "strong" genes, which make them naturally more resistant to the virus,  live.

This is highly simplistic,  it isnt the genetics but lifestyle choice and social issues that cause the majority of underlying health conditions, bad diet at times by choice but also because companies producing cheep low quality food using industrial methods, lack of exercise, with environmental pollution and poverty are all far more responsible for a persons underlying health conditions than their genetics.

Quote from: charles1948 on 05/03/2021 19:46:42
That's how it it would happen in a strictly Darwinian world.  People with naturally "strong" genes survive.  People with "weak" genes, die.  This is called "Natural Selection"

The genetics we have, have evolved from our past,  modern society is a completely new environment in comparison,  and "strong" Gene's for our ancestral environment quiet possibly bare little assistance to the current one. It's not the strongest Gene's that survive it's the best adapted Gene's and you can't know until you find yourself in that new environment how adaptable the Gene's a person has are.

Strong and weak are meaningless terms with regards to genes

Quote from: charles1948 on 05/03/2021 19:46:42
However we are defying "Natural Selection" by inventing "vaccines".  These artificial products of human ingenuity enable even people with "weak" genes to survive the pandemic.

Is that "Eugenics", or a kind of "Counter-Eugenics"?  I can't make it out - can anyone advise?

It's neither, developing treatments for diseases isn't eugenics in any way. Well there are DNA mRNA treatments could be if they start changing the genetics of the people that recieve them.

But helping people survive through medicine isnt eugenics, any more then helping people survive by feeding them would be. Ofcourse death panels that are choosing who should be treated and who should not would be a form of eugenics, eugenisists would be selective in treating the "proper" people. And that is happening.

Bioethics and the new eugenics

Just Chat! / Re: What exactly is a "full English breakfast"?

One memorable morning in the last century I had breakfast in St Bartholomew's Hospital staff restaurant, with an American x-ray sales rep.

Leathery eggs swimming in grease, bacon cut from the uppers of an army boot, 20mm black armor-piercing sausages, postmortem hypostatic tomatoes, cold rubber toast with frozen butter, and lukewarm bilge in a coffee cup.

At the checkout my colleague asked "How can you f**k up an English breakfast?"

"800 years of practice, sir" was the smiling reply.

What's his face from eastenders tell a simpler joke.

Guy asks for an English breakfast but says I would like you to cook it my way. "Hows that"? the chef replies.

"I want the beans cold on top, tepid in the middle but burnt on the bottom, I want the egg to be the same, I want the fried bread so fully of oil it leaks all over the plate and covers everything in grease, I want the sausages black and hard so when you try and get them with the fork they spring off the plate"

"I dont have time to do all that" replies the chef.

"You found time yesterday!" Replies the guy

Considering that a bunch of amateurs have made a fortune from share trading on "Gamestop" shares via Internet forums, is it revealed that the reptile conspiracy of the upper classes perpetuation has always been facilitated via opportunity that only they had access to up until now?

This is a culmination of forces, the internet has allowed chat rooms to organise and the possibility for smaller members of the public to trade. The lock downs have got people on the internet with cash not spent going out to be invested they also have more time to research. That's one side. The other is these people are annoyed about the 2008 crash and are also annoyed about the repeated socialism for the rich,  where failures of the wealthy are paid for by the public while their profits are kept, they pay hardly any tax yet benefit the most from government protection. This has led to a lot of anger and its justified.

On top of that hedge funds have for decades now been shorting companies and driving their stock to 0 so they can buy them cheep destroy them and then sell off the pieces for huge profits. Those actions have gutted the first worlds manufacturing and lost millions of jobs to the economy. That combined with corporations shipping jobs off to Asia simply to save on labour costs had also compounded the effect on wages across the first world, effectively wages have not risen in the west since Thatcher and Reagan started this neoliberal agenda.

Corporations are profiting from wars yet paying none of the costs.

With that backdrop, people noticed the hedge funds were targeting GAME STOP with a few other companies for destruction.  And decided to save them. There is also the point of the lock downs destroying main street business' and companies like Amazon profiting from that.

So this action was a defense of high street shops and a way to claw back some money from people that have spent decades profiting from destroying the economy.

These companies are not producing anything they are not adding to the economy.

Have the rich been funding themselves by ripping off the poor for centuries that they only had access too, and is it over now?

Not over this is a game changer.  The elites wont just sit back and do nothing they have already been, using their media to claim these groups are like domestic terrorists or racist. They are currently claiming falsely that the wall street bets crowd are now buying silver which is a lie they are not.
They used hate speech as a justification to close the chat rooms Robinhood the trading app, refused to allow its users to buy anymore stock and only allowed them to sell, after the stock price crashed and the hedge funds got out of their short positions,  trading on Robin hood was allowed but people were only allowed to buy one share. The chat rooms are now back working.

If anyone deserves the title domestic terrorist its the hedge funds and banks Max Keiser has been calling them domestic terrorists for years.

If anyone does decide to buy silver they should only accept physical delivery, never paper.

Manipulation of a belief system at high layers can make otherwise normal person to commit immoral actions. Similar thing happened in the mind of many terrorists.

There are enough instances from psychological experiments and the recruitment of concentration camp torturers to suggest that all that is required to do things that are obviously immoral is the appearance of authority or permission.

That is incorrect the milgram experiment showed about 61% of participants were prepared to follow the lead of an authority figure compared to the 39% who would resist.

If anything its evidence that the 60% need to be taught that it's ok to resist authority on occasion, not that the situation is helpless.

COVID-19 / Would a nasal spray vaccine be better for SARS cov2?
« on: 22/01/2021 22:40:58 »
I was wondering if a nasal spray vaccine would be better to vacinate people against SARS cov2 as it would mimic the normal transmission method. Is there any evidence to support the notion that vaccine administered in a similar way as natural transmission occurs are more effective?

I pondered weather injecting a virus into the blood stream or muscle tissue might change the immune response.

"The vaccinations are expected to produce antibodies against spike proteins of SARS-CoV-2. However, spike proteins also contain syncytin-homologous proteins, which are essential for the formation of the placenta in mammals such as humans. It must be absolutely ruled out that a vaccine against SARS-CoV-2 could trigger an immune reaction against syncytin-1, as otherwise infertility of indefinite duration could result in vaccinated women."

So according to this Article Sarscov2 might attack the Immune system in the same way HIV does

https://www.scmp.com/news/china/society/article/3079443/coronavirus-could-target-immune-system-targeting-protective

So if this was a created Virus looks like they added HIV and SARS to the common Cold.

Trying to gain herd immunity to this Virus is an insane idea. We still don't have anywhere near enough information about it.

Ofcourse, as does philosophy, or meta physics. Each truth has a system of logic that supports it.

Really do not want to get stuck as Sam Harris and Jordan Peterson did.

Inherently your question takes a stance.

how we should live? how should we treat others? What is the nature of evil or sin?
well, i guess so. but if we based our moral choices on what is written in the bible well we would be acting as though they did in the spanish inquisition. id rather live my life actually by moral code rather than the moral(immoral) code of the bible

A total assumption. And an inaccurate one. The spainish inquisition were a tool of power seeking to impose its will over the rest. If anything the bible teaches the opposite.

The bible is concerned with human interaction, peace, justice, life.

While science can say how things are it will never tell you how to live save some dietary suggestions.
as above

Is nothing related

Quote
Quote from: Jolly2 on 04/04/2020 01:46:50
Again meaningless in this regard
well, i guess if one just uses the bible as a kind of moral storybook like the boy that cried wolf or 3 little pigs, then yes this is meaningless.
but so many people try to claim that the bible is so much more. some even make the claim that its accurate in some kind of real life sense.

Jordan Peterson does actually claim that the teaching of the bible about how a person should live match rather well to the psychological data on the same question.

Quote
Quote from: Jolly2 on 04/04/2020 01:46:50
Not at all, I highly recommend you listen to some of the lectures on the psychological significance of the biblical stories given by Jorden Peterson
pretty much as above

A non statement again. I don't see why you bother writing this it's pointless.

Quote
Quote from: Jolly2 on 04/04/2020 01:46:50
Again this a highly simplistic view of religion and faith.
care to enlighten on a more realistic view then?
Quote from: Jolly2 on 04/04/2020 01:46:50
And never will it because as I suggested before that is not what the bible is interested in.
true there are many parts that are stories of past events. there are historical things throughout it. and from all these stories we are supposed to derive some meaning to our lives.
but what about when the stories are just plain wrong. what meaning do we derive from that? the story, or the wrongness?

You are deciding what is and is not right or wrong. Bad stories can also teach.

Quote
Quote from: Jolly2 on 04/04/2020 01:46:50
Sadly the position  you hold is one many people do, a very condescending one that is also based more in ignorance then understanding.
please elaborate

Quote from: Jolly2 on 04/04/2020 01:46:50
The Noah story is the story where mankind becomes corrupt so God sends a flood. And there is a link drawn in this story to corruption and floods.
When new Orleans was flooded a few years back it happened because corrupt politicians for decades had stopped spending money on Levy defenses.
from a viewpoint of a moral wise story for humans to learn from (just like the boy that cried wolf) i agree with this.
but many people believe this actually happened.

So what? It's irrelevant really.

Quote

Quote from: Jolly2 on 04/04/2020 01:46:50
why wouldn't they
just like above, if one uses its stories in the same way they use little red riding hood then i see merit it that.
but to use it as a whole as some kind of 'encyclopedia' for all of lifes challenges is misleading and serves no purpose.

Completely disagree.

Yes.. I have read multiple views and yesterday I read that it's been rolled out that it could have been a human created virus but instead they believe it may have been around kinda dormant in humans for Avery long time and that at some point long ago it was initially in a animal..like bat snake etc...but that at some point it was transferred into humans who may have already harbored a differentiate..and for whatever reason became actively a deadly virus now apparently..but my memory may have some of that mixed up..but have you all heard that yet?

I have now. Thanks Karen

Honestly right now have a strange feeling that the western leaders are refusing to impose mandatory face masks because of negative liberty and how it's maintained. Not sure what's more disgraceful the practice itself or the endangering of the public safety to  continue it.
