How to stop river for building Dam for generation of Voltage/ current .

It usually starts with building a coffer dam and tunnel to divert the flow of the river around the construction site for the main dam.

When the main dam is finished, the flow of water through the tunnel is stopped, and the main dam fills up.

Much of the water supply for Sydney Australia comes from the Warragamba Dam.

I recall reading that the decision to build the dam came after a 7-year drought.
- In the first 2 years of construction, several floods washed away the site works.
- Such is the unpredictability of the weather.

This is an example of a concrete dam, and the maintenance activities needed on a dam which is now almost 70 years old.
