Dear Grassologists,
As a sheepy I of course luff grass !..I luff it !..I walk on it...sleep on it...eat it ..wee-wee and poo-poo on it.......even make baby sheep on it too !...Gawwd bless ewe Grass and no mistake !
Look here I am enjoying some grass fun !...Yep, this is BIG grass and is a bona fide photo too...yep..no copying and pasting done here at all !!

Say EWE wanted to share my passion and indulge in some grassy nutritional bio-matter !...I'm pretty sure eating itis not so good for ewe(from an earlier thread) , but could ewe juice it ? Could ewe enjoy a grass juice drink ?..would it be good for ewe or just make ewe sick ?

Grass drinks were a fad amongst super models a while back. that is all they would drink until they themselves turned into a blade of grass.

I suppose the type of grass that is being juiced would also matter, I don't think there will be much juice coming out of some them... you know those big weedy ones that crawls all over the place (not weeds, but grass). The grass they use for golf greens looks very nice if you were to chuck them into the blender [:P] [:P]

When I was nowt but a lass (a small girl) I used to lie in the long grass in my grandads meadow and pull out the blades and chew the juice out of the stalks. D lish.
I also made owl hooters out of the thicker blades.

Me too!!! at theend f each stalk coming from the ground is a core like inner yumminess... I put that end betwen my teeth and pull the bottom of blade through my teeth to slide core out.. it it good and I always ate that part.. it was tender and good!! LOL!!! I also love sorgumor (sour grass) alone or in salad... yummy!!!

I believe eating grass is a bit different to chucking them in the blender and trying to get some juice out of it [:P][:P] There doesn't appear to be a lot of juice in the lawmower after the lawns have been mowed [:-\] [:-\]

There is a "health" product called Wheatgrass Juice (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wheatgrass) which is, well, juice from wheatgrass. It has been hyped as the new elixer to everything, though there is (strangely) no proof of any of it being true. However, it is a drink made from grass.

Especially if left to ferment before you drink it.

I grew up surrounded by sugar cane farms, me and my mate sometimes spent hours chewing on sugar cane, good times.
Incase anyone ever tries it the best way we discovered to do it was to bash the stalk against something hard, you're not trying to snap it in half but split it down the middle. Then take these two halves and split those down the middle again, so you end up with quarters. Then its easy to chew the guts out of it.
Especially if left to ferment before you drink it.
We got into the rum when we were a bit older :P

This is exactly the stuff that the blade thin super models were drinking. I bet Madonna and Sting also drink it as they are into mad stuff.

Don't forget to run it through a still.
(Having said that (and I quite like rum) is there a drink made from undistilled fermented sugar cane juice?)
It would certainly seem a reasonable thing for someone to have tried.

Let's say I'm not interested in palatability, but in nutritional value only. Can I juice typical lawn grass...fescue for example (or other popular grass grown in US or, more specifically, the Southeast US). Wheatgrass is highly touted for it's nutritional benefits, so how does regular old grass compare to it...or does it at all. They look similar, are both grasses, and neither seem to be poisonous. I don't see why lawngrass wouldn't provide a nutritional juice, with potentially high/good value....similar to comparisons of wheatgrass vs spinach or broccoli. None of those three can be dis-counted. Sea grasses can be awesome as well. Seems like almost any non-poisonous green plant is a nutritional powerhouse if you can figure out the best way to harness it's energy.
All the world's largest mammals/animals are grass or sea grass eaters....aren't they?

The worlds largest mammal is the blue whale and I really don't think you can describe its diet as grass.
Plenty of pretty big animals do live on grass and they can do this by getting bacteria in their specially desigend stomahcs to do the digestion for them.
Most grass juice would be mainly water, of course it would have other nutrients in it but I think there are more practical ways of getting your vitamins than eating (or drinking) lawn clippings.
I also have a vague recollection that at least some grasses are toxic or harbour fungi that produce toxins.
I'd go to the greengrocer's instead.

I'm still looking for an answer...I juice wheatgrass (expensive and a bit of trouble) and I do frequent my local green grocers often.
To be more specific, I'm not talking about eating after I mow per se...I'm talking about a much more convienent and efficient juicing grass than juicing wheatgrass.
I have a vegetable garden that I am reducing in size due to excessive shade on a portion of it...I've planted grass, and in looking at it, wondered why I couldn't juice it. It's in great soil, and pretty well protected from toxins...and it's new young grass.
I have since found some articles on this and by all unofficial accounts, you can juice it and it's quite comparable to wheatgrass. You don't want old grasses or anything easily polluted (ie roadside or other). From what I read, the most value comes from the first cutting, as in wheatgrass, then dimishes with each cutting from there...but in my case, that would be no different than going through the trouble of tending to potted wheatgrass, so I'm curious.

A lawn will be comprised of a number of different grasses, for example
40% Gator PRG
25% Herald Strong CRF
15% Chewings Fescue
15% Slender CRF
5% Highland Bent
Will give a resilient lawn suitable for the average garden, while
40% Musica Chewings Fescue
40% Reggae Slender CRF
10% Egmont BTB
10% Highland BTB
Would give a fine show lawn you would stick ‘Keep Off The Grass’ notices around.
Most back garden lawns will also contain Ryegrass.
The animals which live almost exclusively on grass, the ruminants, though not all ruminants, have a complex stomach to deal with this rather tricky food source. Liquidising the grass would at least obviate the need to ‘chew the cud’, but the presence of bacteria in the gut to aid with digestion is essential. Effectively, the food is fermented in the gut, hence the tendency for these animals to be less than desirable at the dinner table and accused of adding to the worlds greenhouse gas problems.
Just what the nutritional value of these lawn grasses might be, I do not know. The ruminants which live on grasses are quite large animals, they have to be in order to eat and digest enough to survive, so I would guess that most of these grasses are relatively poor in nutritional value.
Of course if you want to put the lawn to good use, you could just compost the cuttings. Or if you want a lawn to supply you with a nice drink, you could have a chamomile or thyme lawn.
