The American version of the British show
Life on Mars
ended after only 17 episodes. (The British version only lasted 16) The show is about a NYPD police detective who is hit by a car in 2008, and is transported back to 1973. At the end of the series Det Sam Tyler learns that his 1973 & 2008 realities are
both
fictitious. He is really an astronaut from the year 2035 that was in a stasis virtual reality "neural stimulation" deep sleep. As the spaceship enters into Mar's orbit Sam Tyler awakens, as he is a part of the first ever manned mission to Mars. He originally asked the computer to make him a cop in 2008, but due to a glitch caused by an asteriod strike, the spaceship's computer sent him to 1973 without his 2035 memories, but memories of a person that lived in 2008. Bizarre, but awesome!
