As this forum is all about viruses, I was wondering whether it was more fitting to either wish every one a merry Christmas and a happy new year, or alternatively a merry syphilis and a happy gonorrhea?

I'm afraid that I fail to see how your alternatives are more politically correct. In any case, I find the traditional "Bah! humbug!" is applicable to all, except the clinically soppy, who deserve to be upset.

[Pedantry alert]
Syphilis and gonorrhoea are both caused by bacteria, not viruses.

Since the term Christmas is christian, and it's only new year according to the christian calendar, maybe a more universal seasons greeting would be "Happy short days" on the northern hemisphere or "Happy long days" on the southern.
In the tropics, there's nothing to be happy about anyways...

Happy Solstice everyone.
BTW, to be seriously pedantic, nobody actually said the diseases were viral.

Well, I prefer the Dr Spooner version myself:
Crappy Hismas and a merry yew near.
