All you had to do was  either reformat your hard drive or remove it completly from your pc  and clean everything out of the registry in regards to symantec , norton and liveupdate and then if you reinstalled it would have given you another years subscription free.

Up until recently, I too was using AVG - I actually find some of the paid up ones such as Norton and Mcafee to have more of a hedache than the freebies.

I have just put together a new PC, and loadec Windows XP x64, only to find the AVG does not support 64 bot operating systems, so I have moved over to Avast (quite a few reports of Avast seem reasonable - although AVG seems one of the most popular freebies).

I use Norton.  I tried to renew it when it expired.  It let me download the renewal thingy, but I for some reason it won't let me run the program.  Funny, it had absolutely no problems taking my money!!!  AND to actually speak to someone they want to charge something like $29.00.  Money hungry greedy b*#@*#%#s!!!

We use AVG free edition and Zone Alarm for a firewall. We also run hitmanpro (www.hitmanpro.nl) occasionally just to catch anything that might have slipped by our defences. All of these are free and have kept our computer(s) virus free. The reason my computer died was a hard disk failure  [:(] [>:(]

I heard that too, then I heard it was a false alarm, though they do keep trying to get peeps to upgrade.

AVG will require you to upgrade in January, but I don't think they will be withdrawing their free version for home use.

There always was a charged for version for commercial use, and nothing has changed about that.  They also do, as many other companies (such as RealAudio and ZoneAlarm do) make the commercial version of the software the obvious one to download, so you have to hunt around a bit to find where the free version is.

While AVG version 7.1 won't be free anymore, as long as you switch to its version 7.5 you won't be charged. AVG doesn't make this too clear though, in the hope you'll opt for its costly version.

As I understood it, it is not that 7.1 will not be free, but that 7.1 will not be - period (support for 7.1 ceases in any form).

7.5 will continue to have a paid for, and a free version; but they will push the paid for one under your nose, while making you hunt hunt about a bit for the free one (nothing new in that policy, however irritating it may be).
