Cloning comes from the Greek word for twig.
It refers to the ancient process of taking a  cutting (i.e. a twig)  to propagate plants.

My understanding is that most commercial pear trees are already produced this way.
It also gives you the advantage of choosing a different rootstock for a particular variety of pear to suit the conditions you have.

So, why do it the hard way?
