Dearest Peeps With An 'ology in Waving.

As a sheepy I of course luff to wave....especially at boats. It's all I think about really. From the moment I awake , waving at boats is all I think about. Well done the bloke who invented 'waving at boats'.

Lets face it !!...if we all spent more time waving at boats than waving our fists then the world would be a happier place !


Now then, I do not wave at people as they drive by in their car , or lorry....or people on a train or bus or horsey....but ....if I am aboard a boat or see people on a boat I am more than likely to have a ' wave-at-people ' moment !...why's that then ?


What's the psychology of waving at people on boats ?


As a firm believer in empirical study I made a boat out of paper and drew spme people on it.....I placed it in the bath and gathered the family around....We just could not help ourselves...the compulsion to wave was strong and we waved....even when the boat sunk !


so, Why Do People Wave at and Wave From Boats ?


I realise some people may wave at people on other forms of transport but boats win hands down !

If you would only wave if it were sailing on the Thames, but not when causing a bloody traffic jam driving around Parliament Square, I would venture to guess that it has something to do with waves. The wet watery ones, I mean.

Do you wave at waves while dipping your tootsies in the briney at the seaside?

I live in a little village in Bulgaria near to the Turkish border.  For the last few months the main European Highway from the border has been closed and much of the traffic diverted through our cobble streeted village.  My mate and I can oft-times mid afternoon be found sitting outside a local bar hostelry sampling the local beverages.  Two coaches pass us each day, one from Istanbul the other returning to said Capital.  Both drivers started to acknowledge us so we raised our glasses in homage to them.  Now they honk at us as they pass and often passengers raise their imaginary glasses as they covet our cold beers.  Turkish long distance lorry drivers now give us a blast on their air horns.  They sound like an ocean liner.  Often the lorries travel in convoys and they all give us a blast.  So I guess my mate and I must have some ship like qualities or perhaps we have just become a local landmark.

That looks more like a duck. And you know what they say -

"If it looks like a duck, and it quacks like a duck, it's probably a duck."

People around here always wave, whether in boats or in cars. When I'm out walking the dogs I even have a fake Queenie arm sewn on my jacket to wave at all the people in their cars cos I get too tired to wave at them myself.

There might be a historical reasoning to it.

In times of pirates, when good navi - compasses were costly n the seas rumbling with unsafe waters maybe it was just a delightfully happy sight to see a ship approaching back safely from a life threateningly drowning endeavour.
And when a ship set sail for a journey towards the end of the world, likely town folks would want them to have a safe n sound journey, probably waving good wishes realizing the ship might never make safe docking to a/the/any shore ever again.

So many people tune in to watch space rocket countdowns, its amusing n interesting, but with humans onboard attaches a special emotional link to the launch.
Maybe when the lift off technology reaches a 100% guaranteed success level people might not tune in with immense curiosity n such great numbers.

P.S. - They say even during a disagreement or in the middle of a fight, never leave a loved one with a frowny face.
Always say your goodbyes with a smile, coz you might not get a chance to see that person ever again.
Life is fragile, theirs n yours too.

The custom of one boat waving to another comes from the etiquette of saluting:
“When boats pass each other with embarked officers or officials in view, hand salutes are rendered by the senior officer and coxswain in each boat. Coxswains rise to salute unless it is dangerous or impracticable to do so.”
Nowdays it seems everybody waves.
