« on: 29/09/2009 00:02:40 »
As a sheepy I am of course long-sighted (US translation service: "Long-Sighted" = Far Sighted...."Short-Sighted" = Near-Sighted:....sheesh !!)

Being Long-sighted enables me to keep an eye on my harem and any offending sheepy bois who might want to partake of my sheepy action !

Thusly, when reading I need to ewes spectacles. look, here I am with my designer frames:

Me With MY Designer Frames

Why are some people long sighted and others short sighted ?...I suspect there are many more short-sighted peeps than long-sighted yes ?...why's that then ?

I would like to know this as it's something that I would like to know. Once I know it..I will not need to know it again.

hugs & shmishes

OR BOTH?

For most of my nearly 80 years I have been extremely longsighted in my left eye and shortsighted in my right eye.

For as long as I could read I used only my right eye. This is called monovision.

In May I was diagnosed with cataracts. It was decided to remove both my cataracts but I was given no guidance or discussion on the replacement lens. The NHS, in all its wisdom, decided to operate on the right eye first.
So what? You ask. Read the second line again. I could only read with my right eye.

Hence after more than 79 years I could only read with a magnifying glass.

I won't bother you with the rest of the story ... you can probably guess it for yourselves.

I think being short sighted comes partly from being an introvert.  As a child, I always was most interested with what was in front of me, and not so much the larger picture.  Your eyes really do get stuck that way, just like Mother told us.

I am also short sighted to the tune of about 16 cm, but have monovision due to a late realignment in my childhood. I have a strong preference for my right eye and only read by that one. Negligible depth perception.
Due to complications of a friendly pitbull attack, I developed cataracts, most severely in my right side.  So I was given a choice for near or far, and chose to keep the short-sightedness.  But I focus at 50cm now, about exactly where the screen is, so I actually spend most of my day without glasses, wearing them only to drive.
Bad thing about that is that I've never learned to mind my glasses since I had always worn them at all waking hours.  So now they get misplaced all the time.  I have a stack of 5 of them and hope I don't lose them all at once.  Only 2 lost as of the writing of this.
It is hard to find a place that sells cheap driving glasses.  All the ones on the rack have positive lenses.

This is strange:

Bold applies to me also. Underline is what I wanted but was given no prior choice which I should have been.
The dog 'attack is some coincidence. Fortunately the claw went straight in and out of my eye so no damage was done. It was a long time ago (about 50 years ago I think. I am 79 now).
Are you in UK?
Surgeon finally admitted I should have had a choice. I wanted to keep right eye shortsighted and have left made to match. After he had made right eye 'normal' he really did not want to make my left (longsighted) eye shortsighted giving me monovision the opposite way around to all my previous life.

Catastrophe (averted)

PS I use Catastrophe as my handle because I am interested in asteroids etc..

Your dog attack doesn't seem so friendly.  You got cataracts from being clawed in the eye?  No, I think you're saying it was unrelated.

Mine was very indirect.  It was a very playful freindly dog, but it had apparently been romping in the poison ivy so I ended up with systemic poison ivy the next several days.  They treated it with prednisone and that drug apparently has a potential side effect of cataracts.  I went totally blind on the right in about 8 months.  My left has a bit of it, but not enough to correct.

I am in USA.  We have a lot of poison ivy around here.  I know how to deal with it, but you can't tell if a dog is covered with the stuff.

Sorry, did not phrase that very well.
Dog was not a Pitbull.
It was docile and friendly. Just tapped gently forward into my eye. I did not see it coming.
Nothing like as serious as your expeience.
