Humans are obviously ill-equipped for hunting or grazing, so must spend their days foraging, like other apes

Yes, but in a cat or dog's non-sentient mind, they must, on some level, wonder where we are for such long periods of time. They must think we're hunting/scavenging. Where else does this never ending supply of food come from.

a cat or dog's non-sentient mind
Please define non-sentient, prove nonsentience in  your named species,  and explain how this implies the formation of hypotheses about animals that are not present. Or join a philosophy forum where bullshit is tolerable!

My dog knows where I have been.
- When I come home, he sniffs me carefully (up to the knees - he has a very low center of gravity)
- I get the impression that if I have been in contact with other dogs, he spends more time sniffing me.

After all, dogs having contact with other dogs is important for what was originally a social/pack animal
- As for food, my dog is happy as long as he is fed (and comes and annoys me if he is hungry)
- Plus, I hide some food around the house at his height, so he can do some foraging too...
