Is it possible that man cannot and will not ever "fly like a bird"?
-
How much "like a bird" would it need to be?
-
Man flys like a penguin.

Yves Rousseau (France) is credited with some ultralight aircraft FAI world records and has received international recognition for his 13 years of work on human-powered ornithopter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ornithopter) flight; Rousseau attempted his first human-powered flight with flapping wings in 1995 ... on 20 April 2006, at his 212th attempt, he succeeded in flying a distance of 64 metres, observed by officials of the Aero Club de France. Unfortunately, on his 213th flight attempt, a gust of wind led to a wing breaking up, causing the pilot to be gravely injured and rendered paraplegic.

Some of us already do.

"Some of us already do."
What sort of bird flys by getting into one of those?
-
A hummingbird

If you mean, by attaching bird-like wings and flapping, not a snowballs chance in hell.

I was amazed to learn, not long ago, that they even have a different respiratory system from mammals. They need it because of their ultra high rate of energy use.

Quite so sophiecentaur, in fact there are so many differences between birds and other animals, its not surprising they are the only true fliers. Their bone composition and skeletal structure and the speed at which they can digest food and excrete waste are other factors in their difference to other animals.
If you want to fly like a bird, you'll need a wishbone, and I don't mean to wish on.

and big muscles to power the wings which would have to be big.. really big to lift the average human.
And you can't use wax (apparently)
-
Possible!
But, man cannot fly with his arms together.
The man can fly with equipment, the equipment is some of wood like plane, and put it into his back.
Dont try this at home. I'm not sure it will works

Obviously , in a low or no G environment . Less obvi. , with helium-filled wings . Still less obvi. , with a giant quad exo-skeleton ( prone position ) . Given full control of each lift-fan , this could be better than those "flying-sqirrel" suits . It might also prove useful , once safe .
OK , somebody call "Birdman" , wild fun about to happen ! P.M.
