Title: Do these hydroponic type kitchen herb gardens work?
Post by: Karen W. on 12/10/2007 12:04:02
Well they delivered it late last night I assembled it filled it with water and two nutrient tablets and set in the herb cups in the holes and covered each with a domed lid!
Now it is automated plugged in and does everything but add water and change light bulbs basicly! LOL Have any of you used it or worked with hydroponics!

Oh yeah I forgot to say that this growing session will consist of chives parsely basil, mint, italian basil, dill, cilantro, purple basil. It says 8 weeks .. for some reason I always thought Hydroponics was some faster, perhaps this is a bit different or I was wrong!

I've had some experience with hydroponics.... but not related to garden herbs

I have a box of cherry tomatoes I will plant the second time round.. Are they harder to grow in the water!

Hydroponics are fascinating and you can leave the item to grow and take what you will. We did that with lettuce on the ground anyway!

they make these things in units of three and they hang on the wall.. they are great so far..! I haven't had to do anything but put the water in the first time and take domes off when tops came through the cardboard discs.. easy so far! A light will come on when I am supposed to add second set of nutrients..

That looks so  [8D] Karen, almost like the hydroponics bay in Star Trek  [;D]

I'm a wee bit jealous I must confess but perhaps this 'thing' is the answer to my growing problems. Our ground floor flat gets very little natural light and so far pretty much everything I've tried growing has died. The window sill is the only semi-ok environment but it's above the heaters (ancient system here!) and so in winter, as in now, they boil to death, poor things.

It looks pretty big though..... and I wonder if we have something like that over here (though were I'd put it is anyone guess)

They can be bought in stacks of three! that hang on the wall over the top of each other.. So far they are working great... I will send you a link if you like they can be bought over the net..

Mine has started to collect dust I see I better dust it! LOL! I want a set of the three that hang on the wall. I bought the cherry tomato packs.. and if I don't buy another I will not see my cherry tomatoes LOL!

Probably as much as a sunbed  [::)]~ judging by the brightness of those lamps

Lucky plants!  [;D]

At least they don't need to hop on a plane for 10 hours to catch some decent sunshine
(living in the UK can  definitely have it's drawbacks)

How much electricity does it use?

This is what I found:

The AeroGarden system has been designed for maximum efficiency. The entire system uses less energy than a single 60-watt light bulb.

For me and the  digging and weeding is all eliminated they make units of three for 300.00 and some odd
dollars.. I like them.. I wonder how much better the ground would be but it is still going and we have been harvesting since Nov. 27th this is into the 4th month of harvest for this batch!

That is a fascinating thing to do Karen W and it looked so nice too. What I would like to know, please, is whether this apparatus can be built at home from scraps (I'm in the UK). Is it a special type of light bulb or is it an artificial daylight type and do you know what the nutrient was?

I do believe its a special very bright grow light which is set  up on a timer. I would think that one could build one from scraps using a simple plastic container with a lid wth holes cut out to fit like medicine size disposablle cops a starter pots with the bottom opened up in quarters.. I wll try to post you some pictures to your messages, showing you the cups and how the seeds come shipped etc.
As far as the light goes I assume it is grow light, theirs has a specific end made to fit the hoodfd of the gardens top. but I am sure a properly spaced grow light placed two inches above the plants as they grow will be appropriate.
I used a bit of miracle grow after I ran out of nutrient.. I think it was similar.. I will investgate for you.
