Who invented them? I'd like to know since this is what my science fair experiment is over! Thanks!

I know I use them a lot and I had a quick look around but couldn.t find an actual inventor....

This article claims that ' tums ' were invented in 1928 http://www.brandweek.com/bw/magazine/current/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1001392315   but I am sure anaatcids were doing the rounds long before that !!

Yeah almost 100 years for "tablet antacids".

I'm sure they had other types, but none you could go by over the counter right?

I am sure that bicarbonate of Soda was used in the 19th century and I assume there must have been some old fashioned home remedy's.....we need to ask someone who's really old  who was growing up in those times ??

Ryan, I think baking soda was used for eons check baking soda as an antacid, before Tums etc. You mixed a spoonful or two in a small glass of water and drink it. It worked for me too. But I also heard some thing about to much on a full stomach could hurt you instead.. But I don't know if that was rumor or what???

Check the salts content of these formulas before becoming dependent on them. Bad for blood pressure, particularly gaviscon.

If you have acid problems, then there may be an allergy to dairy products, so try omitting all dairy produce for a week.

Peppermint oil capsules are by far better than all the salt based formulas. Peppermint tea is available in supermarkets, try drinking a cup of this 2-3 times a day.

I have had a long standing problem with acid on a daily basis. I have used bicarb, milk of magnesia, gaviscon and everything else that comes in a bottle or pill, even tagamet and many others from the doctor. Nothing worked, just temporary relief and the problem comes back as soon as you stop dosing up on the salts.

The peppermint oil and tea cured my constant acid and indigestion problem, but still did not address what was causing it in the first place.

For many years1 piece of toast in the morning and I got acid, a bowel of cornflakes and I got acid, a cup of tea and I got acid. I even drank milk to try to help but it made things worse, certain foods would trigger it.

I can’t remember the time I realised it was a milk allergy problem, lactose intolerance is used to label this. But for a long time now, possibly two years, I do not have an acid problem any more and seldom need to take peppermint except for when my diet includes some dairy produce, but even then there is little to no discomfort and a couple of peppermint oil casuals and the problem becomes a mere memory.

Feeling quite proud of ridding my long standing problem with acid that went back to school days, I called my mother to advise her of my success. She then told me that it made sense because I could not drink cows milk when I was a baby. Pitty she never got around to telling me this earlier as it would have saved me a fortune in antacid tabs and drugs, not to mention the damage I have been doing to myself using this crap.

Forgot to mention that I had helicobactor and did the antibiotic treatement which did reduce the frequency of acid problems for a while, but never resolved it. That was a long time ago and still my acid problems continued right up until I got rid of milk. Thinking back, I used to eat plenty of yoghurts, drink the probiotics as advertised, eat cheese, have milk in our many cups of tea and coffee. Doh

Ryan, vinegar also works well.

As A DIGESTIVE AID

We are all familiar with the feeling known as heartburn, and most of us will pop an antacid such as Rolaids or TUMs, or swill down Mylanta in an attempt to decrease stomach acid. However, in some cases of heartburn and acid reflux, especially as we age, the problem may actually be NOT ENOUGH STOMACH ACID rather than too little. If the antacid doesn't seem to do the trick, you might try a spoonful of vinegar or two per day.

Vinegar neutralizes many toxins taken into the body

I've done this several times, when rolaids didn't help.  I didn't take it every day, only a few spoonfuls when I needed it.  It's disgusting, but it works.
