Title: What to do in Edinburgh?
Post by: Bass on 29/05/2010 18:38:09
My daughter was invited to do veterinary research in equine cardiology in Edinburgh this summer.  She's looking for volunteers [:0]

Not really, but she just arrived and would love to meet people in Edinburgh and/or find fun things to see and do in the area.  Didn't know if anyone from the forum would be willing to be a Scots cultural mentor or pass along intriguing local sights.

which has a "fringe" festival ... http://www.edfringe.com/ , (includes comedy performances (http://www.youtube.com/user/GildedBalloon)).

The Edinburgh Military Tattoo is a bagpipe & tartan extravaganza ...

Bass,

It's a great place to visit. Does she like to do a lot of outdoor things like hiking, sailing, etc., or she more interested in the "fine arts" stuff?

Or vulgar arts : "puppetry of the penis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puppetry_of_the_Penis)" are regulars at the Edinburgh festival.  [:0]

Loves anything outdoors and sports (maybe not cricket yet)- she's found several parks and walked about quite a bit.  Living in the Morningside area.  She just got a bus pass and has a rail pass.

OK - She'll probably enjoy the West and Northwest even more than the Edinburgh area. The Youth Hostels in Scotland are great, and many of them are within a day's hike of each other. I'll try to dig up some links.

BTW - although cricket is played there, the Scots tend to indulge in more energetic activities like, for instance, throwing tree trunks around.

AHH  tossing the caber!

Lived in the mountains of North Carolina during my misspent youth- and tried my hand at this during the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games and gathering of the clans.  Never could beat the old guys (40+) with their better technique.  Did better throwing stones.

Thanks Geezer

Serious hill-walkers do "The West Highland way (http://www.syha.org.uk/holiday_ideas/inspiration__activity_holiday/activity_holidays/summer/west_highland_way.aspx)" (100 miles !)

Bring plenty insect-repellent for the "midges (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Highland_midge)"

She might also enjoy a run along the Highland Main Line railway, either just out to Inverness and back, or continuing on to the Kyle of Lochalsh Line.  Both of these lines are pretty scenic and if she travels on to Kyle of Lochalsh she could then cross, either by the bridge or by the ferry, which I believe still runs, to the Isle of Skye.

Trains run direct from Edinburgh via the Highland Main Line to Inverness but she'd have to change there for the Kyle of Lochalsh.

I tend to agree [;D]

Kintyre is not too far from Glasgow. The area around the Crinan Canal is worth a visit. You can hear the roar of the wirlpool from there.

the best advice i could give her is keep her away from the scotts........

ok there not that bad, if she drives hire a car and drive through glen coe, a place where you just dont care of you get lost, every corner you turn you are astounded by the view. Sterling is not for on the train, a wonderful and very historic town where wallice defeted the english. If she is into the horse thing, or one of the bow leggeded fraturnity, there is the coldstream ride, or the riding of the Berwick Bounds (around 200 to 500 horse's) i rode both its like a point to point without the danger.
the list goes on, scotland is the most heart rendering place i have ever come across, a piece of me still resides there

i think the higland games are played in august and just a quick thought inverness is just not worth it, unless you are walking away from it and into the sumptuse hill of heather and thistles, into the miasma of colour that soothes the soul.

i really, really love the country
