Title: Killer Klowns: why do clowns need big red noses to survive?

In honor of the belated Red Nose Day, I will ask a question that concerns big red noses.
Okay, so, if you're a scientist and are watching the American 1980s B movie Killer Klowns from Outer Space you might find yourself angry. You would not know where to begin when picking out how many laws of science (and reason) are violated in this film. The film is about an alien race that resembles clowns, who land their spaceship in a small town in California on a mission to eat people, creating a bona fide genocide. Apparently, the only way to kill a Klown is to destroy it's big red nose, which causes them to explode. Watching the movie now as an adult, i'm trying to figure out the business behind their red noses and why they need them to survive. Why do you think they explode? The U.S. Air Force and an army of state policemen eventually arrive, with the air force blowing the alien spaceship out of the sky while trying to escape.

Here’s me taking a stab at it:
I think the reason the "Klowns" explode when their "nose" is destroyed is because it's a weak part of their clown-like atmospheric diving suits. Perhaps the surface gravity of their homeplanet is much weaker than that of earth’s. Imagine a Martian who one day travels to earth, who’s gravity is 10x stronger than the red planet, requiring them to wear an ADS, or some kind of avatar to protect them from getting crushed. So, I don't know if their dramatic explosions are caused by some kind of self-destruct to spare them from a painful death- or if it's simply earth's gravity causing it.

The reason is that it was a low-budget ripoff of Mars Attacks and a precursor of The Walking Dead, with cheap makeup and props. Red noses are cheaper to make and explode than complete heads.

How else could I possibly know it was a low budget ripoff?
