Post by: Karen W. on 27/11/2007 14:50:50
Text messages traveling at the speed of light is one of a popular companies new ploys to buy their product, but don't text messages already do that? Fiberoptic lines are all about light travel is this not right? Have I misunderstood???

The Naked Scientists made you one of those people who cannot be easily bamboozled by those kind of claims!  [;)]

As a firm believer in empirical study I wrote a text message on my phone then threw my phone at one of wifeys home made jellys !...the phone shattered !!....but...it was evident to me that the text message did not fly at the speed of light !

Glad I could help !

Well - they travel about as fast as light does through a glass fibre and a similar speed when they are in electrical form on cables. (about 2/3 speed). Between you and the local cell base station, they go a bit faster.
They do, however, spend a long time, in some instances, hanging around in some server, waiting for a chance to be sent. The delay, sometimes, can be really annoying. That lowers their average speed somewhat.

Also a fan of experiments, I sent my roommate a text. She is sitting on the couch next to me. It took 26 seconds for her to recieve the message.

I guess it didn't take the 'pretty route', then.
(Take that as a compliment).
