Ray, as a firm believer in empirical study why don't you attach some string to one of these, swallow it and then let us know the results.

"" Technology News
Once swallowed with water, the PillCam takes about 2,600 color pictures inside the body.
After 20 minutes, the doctor can evaluate the video images and make a diagnosis"".

Hopefully the picture of "PillCam" on the above site is not actual size  [:)] .

With conventional colonoscopy there is approximately a 1:1000 chance it will cause a gut perforation, up to 25% of those with gut perforation will die of peritonitis-septicemia:-
http://www.ingentaconnect.com/content/oup/jnci/2003/00000095/00000003/art00230

The pill camera avoids this small 1:4000 risk of colonoscopy causing death. The pillcam also reaches parts of the intestine that conventional endoscopy cannot reach, (to misquote the Heineken advert [:)]).

So the pillcam is not a gimmic: it has significant advantages over conventional endoscopy.

The pillcam does not store the images, it transmits them to a nearby receiver. Hopefully the pictures do not appear on any old TV set, although it would be more interesting than watching "Big Brother" [:)].

[I am sure readers could suggest titles for any unintentional intestinal reality TV shows].

Scat! Go! Be Gone!

I would believe that this thread is old, coprolitic even, and it is time to colon to a thread less infused with bile. The acerbic nature of the refluxive reaction to a new development in gas analysis leaves a bad taste in my mouth (to obscure?).

Besides, Robert doesn't give crudit where crudit is due: it is the microville that do all the work, where the crapilaries are located that absorbe the nutrients.

I did a search on google about this..and came upon your forums.

Im having this PillCam procedure done on friday 5/5/06. And am abit suspicious about it now.

It says on the Intructions i received that

"Esophageal Capsule Endoscopy is associated with a very small risk of intestinal retention of the capsule, If this is the case it will have to be removed surgically or endoscopically."

They say "very small risk".  But who knows if this is accurate since we dont have decades of evidence to analyze here. And usually when a medicine has a very rare side effect, I am the one that gets those. Plus, this whole "intestinal retention" thing isnt too accurate. I mean, are there some really serious organs it could get stuck on? Im not too found on specifics of our digestion system.

So i dont know now.. What do you guys think?  Wish i had more evidence and data regarding this particular test.

If it works normally, its suppose to pass through my bowel. (obviously)

any input would be great.
thanks

mike

Hi Mike 2110,
the only obvious reason to reject PillCam is if you have poor peristalsis,
 as this could cause "retention":-

http://www.vivo.colostate.edu/hbooks/pathphys/digestion/basics/peristalsis.html

Poor gut motility can be caused by vascular or neurological diseases.

So the nature of your intestinal disorder would determine whether PillCam is appropriate.
