Post by: neilep on 20/06/2006 22:52:54
Dearest Seriously Sexy Science Peeps

Happy Tuesday to you all....YAYYYYYY !!!

Through out your life...is there any greater adversary than your own potential ?

Does it coerce you into working hard with a fervent goal filled with zealous ambition ?

..or is potential your gentle unassuming companion throughout life giving you strength to maintain your head above water ?

Are we supposed to reach our full potential ?...

....Is it even possible ?....

....Is it YOU who sets the limits upon it ?

...or is the goal the continuous challenge ?

whajafink Peeps ?

Some people...especially young children who are gifted...may feel undue pressure to realise their potential. I think this is uncessary, especially parents who have exteremly high expectations of their children.

I think ' potential ' is something that accompanies us through life...I believe it's up to the individual to set their limits based on their own abilities.

The reason why I originally posed the question is because I know two people....one woman who is constantly striving to reach her full potential to the point where she is burning herself out....and one child-savant whose parents (in my opinion ) seem to apply too much pressure on their seven year old child...who never seems to have friends over...is always studying and doesn't seem to get a chance to be.....well...... a seven year old !...he very rarely smiles...and we never see him in their garden.

Perhaps this type of thread is not suited to the nature of this site but it's a point of interest for me and if anybody has any insights into the nature of their own potential or just a comment then please do so.

Oh lordy, I hear my mother, a schoolteacher, saying "Why don't you live up to your potential." It was truely crushing. Until I got into the 3rd and 4th year of college I had no need to study. Sit in class, listen, take good notes, do a scan of the readings and go over your notes before a test. Most of the time those first two years I was hung over for every exam.

Having a decent mind is not always a blessing if it isn't challenged. I found that I was hapopier with a challenge. It finally boiled down to that one idea. Challenge myself with what was not assumed possible then do it or not, I was happier.

The stand-up comedian Dylan Moran does an excellent routine on "achieving your potential"
on his "Monster" show, (available on DVD).

(I cannot find a transcript of his routine on the web)

This is the only transcript of Dylan Moran's "Monster" concert I can find,
not his "achieving your potential" routine, but amusing nonetheless:-

" A big erm health scare on for men for testicular cancer, now that’s a pretty scary thing there…
women don’t get that so much. And it’s a very difficult thing because you have to look for a lump…
in a bag of lumps, and that can take a long time. And you have to do it yourself, because nobody actually wants to touch male genitalia anyway cos it looks like some kind of deep sea fish, you know that became extinct after about an half an hour, it just didn’t do very well.....

If you’re a woman its not any easier, you get to a certain age, you know, you’ve finished bearing children, all that part of your life is over, perhaps you’re not quite so attractive as you once were before, perhaps, maybe, I’m just suggesting, what do I know? And then, you know, you’re not quite so interested in sex or... being alive, and then mother nature thinks “what can I do to improve the quality of this woman’s life, how can I help? What can I do for her? What is that magic thing I can, how, what, I know, a beard!” I mean that can’t be easy. "
