Ken asked the Naked Scientists:
There are three acceptable English plural forms for octopus: octopuses, octopi, and octopodes. My Greek wife, like Dr. Smith's Greek scholar, suggest that octopodes is closest to the Greek plural form.
My mother-in-law makes the best octopus. If you're in West Hartford, look her up; her name is Cathy.
What do you think?

Since when did it become legal for three words to have the same meaning? [

Is that legal, lawful, or permitted?

Yeah, but they are not
exactly
the same, they might be in certain contexts but other times they can be quite different. Whereas octopuses, octopi, and octopodes all means 'more than one octopus'
