max capacity of ballast tanks by ship type?
« on: 21/06/2021 10:46:57 »
(This should be in the Naval Architecture and Ship Design forum, but a forum glitch prevents me from looking at that page while signed in, so I'll put my question here instead. Sorry for any inconvenience.)

I am doing a research project where I need to know the maximum capacity of all ballast tanks on a cargo ship, proportional to the ship size, for a number of different ship types (bulk carriers, tankers, general cargo, container ships, etc). Is this different depending on ship type? Is there somewhere I can look up the information? I assume it must be broadly basic information that a ship design engineer would have on hand...

I suspect this is something the ship designer would have to derive as it would depend not only on ship size and type but on the specific loading distribution. It think the specialist forum is your best bet. I know some yacht designers but no big ship.

Google gave me some links, eg:
https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/engineering/ballast-tanks

Try things like "ballast tank size", mixing it with various types of ships...
