How Do You Repel A Very Persistent Cat?
« on: 12/03/2023 17:17:45 »
I just got cat repellent, and it is only working slightly. Amazon just delivered it (see below).

A couple of days ago a cat came to my house. First with a bunch of his buddies. Now he just comes alone. I wonder if there is not something wrong with this kitten. He follows me day and night, he cries all night outside my door. I'd love to help him, but I've got two kitties of my own. The other day, I walked a couple of blocks down Strathmoor Street where I live. He followed me all the way, weaving in and out of my feet. Several blocks! Why is he obsessed with me.

Detroit Animal Control and local rescues and shelters can't help, because he's not aggressive, he's just obsessed with me for some reason. I don't want to hurt him, and I won't. But he's not my responsibility.

Any suggestions?

Adopt him or get a dog. Either way, you won't be sorry! Unless it's an entire male who is attracted to the smell of your female(s).

"Responsibility" doesn't enter into it: at least as far as the UK police are concerned, all cats are wild animals that occasionally choose to live with humans, which is why you have to report hitting a dog or farm animal with a car, but not a cat, badger, rabbit, etc..... though your insurers will certainly want to see a photo of the deer that crushed your engine compartment (I'm not kidding - they are amazingly tough little buggers!)

It sounds like a case of "Imprinting" - it thinks you are its mother.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imprinting_(psychology)

A year ago, my wife purchased a soft-top convertible, and the cat next door discovered that this is the softest and warmest place to sleep - shedding a lot of white fur on the black roof.
- Now, my wife places rubber mats on the roof of her car as soon as she arrives home.
- Even so, one morning I discovered the cat snuggled into a gap between the mats...

Bucket of water never fails, pepper is supposed to be a deterrent too.

What are you doing with it if you've got cats of your own?

I once had a cat leaving muddy paw prints warming itself on the bonnet of my car, so when I went out there and saw it one day, I crept back in and fetched a bucket of water. That saw it off, and no more paw prints on the bonnet.

My mum was adopted by a cat that had obviously run away from a bad home. She started giving it saucers of milk when it came and sat on her kitchen windowsill, so it decided to stay where it was welcome, and treated kindly.

Humans pick a dog that appeals to them. Cats pick a human that appeals to them.
