I opened up my laptop about two weeks ago in order to clean out the dust that had become trapped in there over the years. It all worked out perfectly for about a week when I noticed my cpu temperature going as high as 70°C, I opened the laptop back up and added more thermal paste to the cpu to no avail. I want to know how to reduce the temperature of the laptop?

Did you monitor the CPU temperature back when the fan was clogged with dust?
- Is the temperature lower now?
Is 70C measured on the silicon chip itself, on the heatsink, or in the outgoing airstream?
I can imagine that even if the heatsink is cool to the touch, the chip itself could be approaching 70C.
You can improve airflow by using an external fan to blow cool air into the air inlet (make sure you don't blow air into the air outlet, as that will just make the chip hotter...).

Hi, a laptop like any other matter in the universe , absorbs and emits heat by the laws and process of thermodynamics.

What this means, is that all matter has a thermal equilibrium and the matter will always try to retain this thermal equilibrium, by absorbing or emitting thermal radiation in the form of heat. In simple terms all matter in a room will try to find room temperature.
To put it simply, heat gain and heat loss of your laptop is also affected by environment. A laptop with a 70°C temperature (T) will get hotter if the room temperature was 80°C, it would stay cooler if the room was say 10°C, the room acting as a heat sink ''extracting'' the heat faster.
Putting laptops on your lap is also not good although that is what they suppose to be for. The heat from your legs rising into the laptop with no free escape route.
Now there is a couple of things which may help, try a black surface to put your laptop on, black being more absorbing than a white surface, alternatively make a laptop stand, which is a simple task really.

Adding more thermal paste defeats the object the purpose of the paste is to fill the microscopic pits between to flat surfaces.
Adding more paste will insulate the CPU from its heatsink with the result that it will run hotter clean the surface of both CPU and heatsink properly and apply just the merest film of compound.

I have had a few computers at work with similar symptoms. Stopgap measure is to limit processor capacity to maybe 50%, eventually the processor dies in my experience, except for an old laptop, it may shut down once a month or so, but after 7 years the guy is happy with it. It has minimal use other than to read manuals that will not work in newer operating systems and pdf readers. The cd (cannot be copied) presents a menu in pdf format to link to pdf documents based on make, engine etc. And he needs the laptop to take it to the shop to link with a code reader to look up codes in the pdf manual.
This is assuming airways are clear, all fans are working, good paste for heat sync, and het sync securely connects, have seen a few with a broken clip or metal u on the circuit board that have lost integrity to keep heat sync attached.

If you are gaming geek then heating of laptop is pretty normal, I am saying this because my laptop temperature usually goes up when I am playing heavy games, For that I recommend you to use a cooling pad, Here are some best cooling pad for laptop on <SPAMMY LINK REMOVED>

I fried a "quality" laptop by running it 24/7 in a back test of stock trading symbols.
the company replaced it free of charge, but suggested I provided it with an external cooling system.
I simply placed it in front of a portable air conditioner, and never had another problem...guess even the best designed computers can be overloaded.

I'm quite surprised that you managed to blow it out just doing that processing; might have been a dodgy chip or poor assembly in the first place.

the company, from whom I have purchased three computers, had no hesitation in shipping out a replacement, never issuing a return number; and I received the replacement in two days.

They may well have been aware of a bad batch, hence the no questions asked.
It's quite challenging to burn out a machine just with "normal" processing and no overclocking. The setup is normally configured to cater for demanding workload with plenty of thermal overhead (cooling capacity in reserve). Machines shouldn't just spontaneously burn out from normal workload.

the computers from this company are in fact overclocked. when I ordered my first, I questioned this, and told them I was looking for reliability, over speed (I am not a gamer).
they told me all their processors are overclocked, and tested for reliability; and that is one of the features I was receiving for paying for their product.
btw, my current tower from them is liquid cooled, and solid as a rock.

It works too long,that's one reason you can't ignore.

It adds cost because you do have a power supply for a laptop. Its the charger.
A desktop isnt meant to be moved either, and laptops and other battery equipped devices tend to throttle the CPU to save power, even when doing a high load task.
