Title: DON'T SHOUT AT ME!
Post by: moses lawn on 25/05/2005 08:37:40
Why do so many TV advertisements shout at us?

Is there any evidence that frenetic shouting and synthetic excitement persuade people to buy goods or services, or are there others like me, completely turned off by it all, hitting the Mute button each time the offending advert re-appears.

It's bad enough to have to put up with the maniacal screaming of sports commentators every time something trivial happens, but why cant we be  spared the same thing when people are trying to get us to buy things?

Any advertisers out there who can tell me why you need to shout at me?

That's because your brain filters out 'droning' sounds, and only sudden ones can get through after a while, just like shouting in a crowd to get that one person's attention will work.

You could in theory make a device that easily blocks all ads on your tv by just monitoring the sound levels and I think also the brightness changes slightly with ads, so that's pretty easy to do technically, you could turn off the sound completely, or make the tv switch to another favorite channel monitoring the old one to switch back at first opportunity. All very doable.

But 'advertising' has already made it very clear they'll cripple anyone trying to get funny, to put it in street terms. That's their single reason for existance, a helluvalot of dough, and they have an awful lot of clout.

Someone should put up a site maybe how to roll your own... mmm. Idea. [:)]
