Title: Why is melatonin a prescription-only medicine in some countries?

Please can someone explain why melatonin is now a prescription only medicine in Europe but not in the USA
What adverse properties has changed its status and why... Please.

I haven't the slightest. Melatonin only has placebo effects. No more dangerous to the body than H2O. The drug certainly cannot be used recreationally.

Exogenous melatonin elicits therapeutic benefits [in the microgram-range] in people with REM-sleep deficits. One of the primary reasons it's sold as prescription-only in some countries, is due to the fact that it's been commonly manufactured at doses above 1mg - thus leading to unregulated dosing protocols that can alter circadian rhythm and ultimately potentiate the sleeping disorder even further

Do we really need the American or British government or whatever watching over us that much? I get why most medications require a perscription, but for a bottle of Calms Forte? I think the fine people at the HHS, DH, et cetera, have too much time on their hands.
