Title: How do you make cold potato chips (French Fries) taste nice again?
Post by: latebind on 17/04/2009 19:41:59
So we all know potato chips taste awesome when they are hot and really terrible when they are cold, which brings me to the question ::: Is there any kitchen science that can help make cold potato chips taste nice again(Like new)? Ive tried a few ways (microwave, oven) and nothing really works yet. Sometimes it makes them taste better but just by a tiny fraction.

Also I have heard that if you refry the chips it helps, but lets be honest that is gross and not worth it. (There must be a cleaner way?)

The only way I have found to eat them after they have gotten cold was to chop them up and make a big pot of soup adding them late in the process!
I too have also had my husband quicjly drop them in the deepfryer and drain them quickly..... still not the same.... and tastes extra greasy to me... yuck!

Microwave it with half the power. It should work, or maybe I'm just weird.

No that sounds reasonable.... do you wrap yours up when reheating or put them in a covered container or paper sack?

I think paper sack is what I would use. Because if I use a bowl or wrap it with cling film, water builds up on the sides and it makes the chips wet, eating wet hard chips is NOT a good feeling.

Double-fried chips *gags*. Now that's something I don't think I'll be in any hurry to try! But then again, I don't eat the regular variety either. No advice to offer here. :)

they are soggy and nasty .... not very good double fried.

My favorite is fresh homemade with ketcup and salt...

I must have never had the kind of potato chips you are talking about. I never once in my life saw them advertised as hot or warmed up. Never did I meet a person who thought that the chips would be worse cold since the always are eaten at room temperature anyways. What sort of chips are you talking about?

What, for some reason, the Americans call chips are in fact called crisps in English.
The Americans seem to have decided to call chips French fries. This is odd- the French certainly didn't invent them (they say the Belgians did it).
Since the potato was originally from South America I can't see how it wasn't the natives there who would have been the first to deep fry them. So, logically the chip is an American fry.

Aha! Thanks.

Are paint chips called paint crisps in your neck of the woods? And Intel makes micro crisps?  [:D]

Never mind my above joking around, I do not know how to make old fries taste better again.

The Fish and Chip shop near where I live is always generous with its portions (even "small" ones!).   As this type of shop is a take-away I walk very quickly home with the food - then eat the fish, followed by the chips/fries.
As there are many chips/fries to be eaten they go cold when I am around half way through.     I therefore store the remainder in the fridge until next day when I put them in the microwave.    To my taste the microwaved ones taste similar to how they did when I first start eating them!

I thought French fries were so called because in Irish "to french" means "to cut". [:)]

Would that make them Irish fires?
