Title: What has happened to TCP?
Post by: Pierre on 29/09/2009 10:30:04
Pierre  asked the Naked Scientists:

Hi Chris,

I enjoy your talks with Redi on TalkRadio 702 tremendously, thank you.

Please can you talk to me about TCP?

I grew up, and old on this product . For some undisclosed reason the government just walked in some 5 years ago and in one foul swoop removed all of this product from all shop shelves (South Africa & neighbouring countries).

I was told that this product was still available in the U.K. I asked a friend to confirm this during a visit this past week. He approached 2 large pharmaceutical outlets and was told that it wasn't economically viable for the manufacturer to manufacture any more and that he might try some of the smaller outlets.

To me this sounds like a lot of hogwash!! After using this antiseptic for more than 50 years I, and some of my medical contacts, still consider this one of the best oral anti-septics ever.

Can you please enlighten me on the science and politics on this product.

Regards,

Pierre Rautenbach.

That's funny - I'd not noticed that TCP had disappeared, but if it has then I will be mortified. It is a good antiseptic and also something of an iconic brand.

Anyone know if the chemists still stock it here in Britain?

Chris

Still available from high street chemists, such as Boots:

The rights were sold by Pfizer to Omega Pharma, along with other OTC brands.
