It depends on what you are wanting to purchase.

Large Companies such as Amazon, Dell, HP, etc would be reasonably safe.  Also online branches of established stores like Sears.

One of the problems that we have now is that many companies do their order processing overseas, perhaps without informing the customers, and there are potentially less safeguards in these overseas processing centers with huge differences between the employee pay and the accounts they are dealing with.

If you choose to call, then make the call during "normal business hours", and it will be less likely that the call will be routed overseas, then listen for clues like accents before you give out your financial information.

Consider a service like PayPal if accepted by the online vendor.  You sign up with PayPal, and then use them as a 3rd party that does the transaction.  Thus, the vendor never actually gets your visa account nor your bank account information.

Cue another "newbie" (less than five posts to their name) posting a spammy link in the next few days...

I like spammy links

I've never seen them. Sound quite good though. Do they make them with luncheon meat instead of pork?

To the OP:

When you do on-line shopping, it's better that the computer you use is connected to a LAN line (i.e., with a network cable) rather than do it wirelessly. Wireless communications carry a greater risk in most circumstances.

I always stick to the main retailers like Spam-azon. Try using a prepaid crud-it card when you next buy something online, it comes with payment protection so is a good way to protect your purchases.

well it depends upon the type of network connection you are using and the encryption ur browser is supporting. Well even after that u are not secure because you never know what type of security is on the server. most people who got robbed online is always due to the breach in the server security and more recently its the server responsible, like if you see the sony entertainment server than the nintendos and various other commercial servers, most people complaint abt theft after using a public wifi... So its always uncertain u never know when this is going to happen u cant be 100% theft proof. The only thing is never shop online, or use third party cards like paypal and not the direct CCs.

I totally agree with CliffordK.

All the major online selling sites are trustworth. Just to add one more popular site is ebay.

You can shop online tensed free in those sites.

Here, I would like to add one more safety measures with the ones mentioned by others.

To be in the safe side, Always make transaction from your own pc/ laptop. Dont use other peoples pc for shopping, as you open the door towards keylogging.

Regards.

Apparently, the spamming would stop if the major banks refused to process the credit-card transactions presented to them by the intermediary banks who deal with the spammers. On the other hand, the spammers don't want to bugger their access to credit card orders, so they make sure the viagra, penis pump, whatever, always arrives in the mail. Err, or so I'm told.

information. Who knows about some safe site for shopping online?

It's never going to be completely safe, but there are steps that you can take to make online shopping as secure as possible.

1) Only buy from the main retailers, these are the trustworthy ones like  SPAMAZON (http://www.spamazon.co.uk/) and Play. They also have safer payment systems on their sites and more reliable customer service divisions.

2) Try using a prepaid card (http://link removed) to buy items online, it comes with purchase protection like a credit card, and avoids you having to use your actual CC, so if anything does go wrong, at least the fraudsters haven't got all your CC details and therefore access to all your savings.

3) Go with your gut instinct, if you don't feel a site is safe then don't order from it, your gut is probably right.

I'm not sure what the legal status of SPAM, and harvesting E-Mail addresses and phone numbers.  I agree that the government, banks, internet providers, e-mail providers, and etc, all could do better at getting rid of the problem.  Most BBS hosts are conscientious about the information that they collect, but some still allow e-mail addresses to be viewed.

As an individual, I will never buy from unsolicited SPAM, no matter how good the deal may sound.  Perhaps only a slight exception for companies that I have dealt with who have put my name on their mailing list...  and seem to use it responsibly.

Make a spam-catcher e-mail address that will pick up many of your online interactions, but can be dumped at anytime.

A few things about online safety.

If a website asks for my birthday, and they don't have a legitimate need for the birthday, then they will not get the correct birthday.  This includes any personals site, and whatever.  Likewise, evaluate carefully the needs for providing other information unless required.

Providing my credit card number for "Age Verification"?  Are they insane?

Use a different password for your online banking than anything else on the web.  And, most credit card companies allow more than 4 digit PINS.

If you have to write down a password, then write it down in a code form that you can understand, but most others wouldn't be able to interpret.  And, don't put the word "Password" next to it.

Big companies are good...  Dell, whatever...  However, keep in mind that many of these big companies have branches in 3rd world nations...  to save a buck...  A small "Mom & Pops" store won't be processing your credit card info in Zimbabwe.  PayPal always sends me an e-mail with every transaction, and every account update.  It is much easier to monitor account activity with them.  And, every online transaction needs to be verified with my PayPal password which isn't written down anywhere and is ONLY used with PayPal.

Personally I don't deal with the "Credit Agencies".  They collect and redistribute far too much personal information without one's permission.  And, at least some of the credit agencies have outsourced their customer service...  so who knows where your personal information gets sent.

If you need a verified payment service, then I can recommend [SpammyLinkRemoved]. There you can quickly open Online Current Account without any problems. And with it, you can make payments anywhere. Verified personally.

TNS should at least think about adding up a 2 tier level of authentication.

Maybe, make having a valid cell/mobile number compulsory for Login/Registration.

P.S. - MODS need Not go thru it, & can be provided with a special key entry.
🗝️
(2 step verification Only for general members)

Giving less secure access to those with the highest levels of access.
That's an unorthodox approach to IT security.
Has it been tried anywhere else?

When I buy stuff online Im not necessery afraid of my card data but a few times I didn't get what I ordered so I think this is the biggest risk.

Shopping online these days is quite safe, you just need to know where to buy. I buy branded clothing wholesale from the spammy store. There is a large selection, and always all purchases successfully reach without problems. And the prices are reasonable, which is also of great importance.
