Technology / Re: How did they make the first screw?
« on: 19/03/2023 20:19:32 »
Probably with a file and a file guide.

I doubt master screws are manufactured from other screws, probably a gear arrangement?

The worst hang overs I have heard of are in dehydrated people who drink on an empty stomach.

Just Chat! / Re: How Human Morality 'Evolves'...
« on: 08/03/2023 14:59:28 »
Morality evolves, especially in the church, somethings today are allowed that they would have crucified you for in the past.

Morality evolves, but people seem to forget that, they also seem to forget that it is usually a hard won thing. Take the vote for instance, in the UK it is only a century since all peoples could vote, the class system then began to erode. Before that if you where working class you had child labour, starvation, bad water. This was morally acceptable.

Technology / Re: Is bitcoin a safe alternative to centralized payment systems?
« on: 06/02/2023 04:45:51 »
No

Bitcoin costs somewhere in the region of 20,000usd to produce, a US dollar bill costs cents to print, most conve tional currency does not exist, is created almost without cost.

People will want to trace and guard their bitcoin from theft, catch the badguys protect from foreign agents doing harm, have a stable system from erratic prices. These things require governments and armies and management.

Technology / Re: Electricity Generation via treadmill. Can one person generate enough?
« on: 20/01/2023 19:26:59 »
A horse power is equivalent to 0.75kw, a horse being able to sustain that level for hours, so 4 horses on treadmills can power your kitchen kettle.

The problem with the supercooled stuff is that the temperature follows the state, it is a cause there of, not a concequence.

I don't know whether you have the capabilities, or more to the point whether it would work but you could try slowing light down.

Hi. I was thinking about steam engines to run on electricity. It says to run 1HP need 40,000 btu.
The economies of scale will be paramount, the smaller the engine the larger the ineficieny.

Perhaps there is a Difference between something Extremely Unpleasant & Repugnant...
Vs
Something which is considered as a " SIN ".
There is no sin other than the value others give to it, what was a sin before is now commonplace. Common sense on the other hand, 'never eat yellow snow' would be a line in the Bible if the middle East had considerable snowfall.

Physiology & Medicine / Re: Are allergies Psychological? Could they be cured through Hypnosis?
« on: 05/10/2022 20:33:23 »
Quote from: SkepticalDebunker on 05/10/2022 19:31:26
There has been research on Pavlovian conditioned immune responses. Rats were made to be allergic to egg albumin (egg protein) through psychological conditioning. To do this, rats were fed egg albumin, while the feeding was paired with a novel stimulus (taste, visual, or audio cue).

After the association was made, when rats were exposed to only the cue (in the absence of egg albumin) their immune systems began producing antibodies specific to the egg albumin. When the rats were fed egg albumin again, they had an allergic reaction. The researchers noted that lesions to the insular cortex (part of the brain) prevented the conditioned immune response, while lesions to the hippocampus did not. They concluded that the insular cortex not only regulates emotions but also immune responses.

What this means is allergies, the immune system, and the brain are very closely linked together. The immune system and brain both communicate with each other, bidirectionally.

This has less credibility than homeopathy, at least a diluted form of homeopathy is known to lessen people's allergies by gradually allowing there bodies to adjust. It is the body and not the mind.

General Science / What should we do with radioactive waste from the nuclear power industry ?
« on: 26/09/2022 21:36:17 »
With the world transfixed on reducing carbon emissions and the Ukraine war showing the vulnerability in energy supplies, it is almost certain the world will embark upon nuclear energy as a means to secure energy security and lower co2.  This will mean a vast increase in waste. How are we to deal with it ?

1) long term storage as is touted at present for the current scrap heap of radioactive junk.

2)launch it into to the sun

3)bury it deep by a subduction zone

4)throw it in the Mariana trench or similar deep ocean. The Pacific seems to have been able to deal with the Fukushima spill.

5)keep it until we find a way to transmogrify said radioactive waste to products of non hazardous nature

6)use the thorium fuel cycle

Or something else.

The escalation will be as follows:

1 - Russian tactical nuclear weapon in Ukraine
2 - USA and allies retaliate
3 - UK and Europe and part of USA destroyed

Are you ready?
Are you aware the UK China USA France and Russia are bound by a un treaty to aid the Ukraine in the event of a nuclear threat. Russia by duty should now give the Ukraine weapons.

General Science / Re: Can we make water w/ very cold pipe consdensating water from air outside fridge?
« on: 05/09/2022 12:26:04 »
I do not really understand the description but fridges leak water anyway, it is usually drained onto the compressor outside the fridge for evaporation disposal and things called dehumidifiers exist already.
