On room 101 Patrick Moore wanted to put May bugs in but what are they? I've never heard of them.

It looks as though Jackson Pollak has been at Brian's shirt! Speaking of which, paint your own masterpiece here (http://www.jacksonpollock.org/). I couldn't find any instructions so you'll have to figure it out yourselves. What I did suss out, though, is double click to change paint colour.

In Norfolk (and parts of Suffolk) we call them June bugs - and no, we're not 13 months behind every body else.
That Jackson Pollack site is fun - pity they didn't use his colour palette though.

Sharon I didn't see the programme but I've always thought that Maybugs where the caccoon for the dragonflies.

I also thought that Patrick Moore was not too bothered by insects,
oh well we learn something evry day.

Good and fun Jackson Pollack site.

I don't think Patrick will see another May, he is on the Deathlist (http://www.deathlist.net/)

oh, so you don`t know june bugs as well?
There were al lot of them flying around this year...in june of course ;)

I took a picture of one of them
(https://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffoto.arcor-online.net%2Fpalb%2Falben%2F33%2F5987833%2F1280_3663653365653030.jpg&hash=e375cab2f7a60b626fc8a53eacad4618)

the may bugs are a bit bigger and have larger antennas.
When I was younger the may bugs where kind of a symbol for endangered species in my area...they where pretty rare in some parts of Germany.
Interesting is, that they are not really rare, but every 5 years there are a lot of them flying around, and nearly no ones in the other years. Thats because of their life cycle...the larva (called grubs)needs about 4 or 5 years to develop to a bug...and they are synchronised... so in the 5th year all the bugs are crawling out of the ground.
And this year was a june bug year
The may bug is a symbol for luck by the way ;-)
