Title: Asparagus Syndrome
Post by: MayoFlyFarmer on 02/02/2005 05:40:03
I was reading about coffee in the semen forum (go figure) and it reminded me....   (if you're eating you might want to come back to this topic....don't say i didn't warn you[xx(])....   When I drink coffee (even a very small amount) my urine ends up smelling quite funky.  Not quite like coffee, but you can definately tell where it came from.  I don't get this from any other caffinated beverages.  I've heard everyone always talking about how asparagus makes your urine smell, but I've never really noticed it, MAYBE once, but i think it was just power of suggestion.  I can't think of any other foods/drinks that have had this affect except captain morgan parrot bay.... oui.... yummy tasting girly drink.... but i make the bathroom smell like coconut every time i went for the next two weeks.... i was kinda scared [:p].

Now that I've grossed everone out, here's my forum question/topic(s):
Does anyone know what elements of these foods make it into your urine to give them this smell.  Are they chemically related in any way, or just random compounds?
Has anyone else observed any other foods/beverages that make your pee smell funny?

ok.... you may now continue on with your breakfast. [:D]

Fish, especially salmon, comes right through.  Coffee and coconut don't seem to make it through, so it must vary from person to person.

yeah, i hear any fruit really.... especially pears and bannannas.... but i'm not sure how accurate this is, and if it is true, I'm sure its by a completely different mechanism (although I DO appreciate your enthusiasm on the subjcect [;)])

i was wondering the same myself yesterday.  I haven't seen him on at all since I've been back.  I couldn't even remember what his new name was.  Does anyone know where he ended up going to grad school?

I'm still around, I just haven't had time to post much.  I keep an eye out in the chemistry section mostly since I'm a mod there.  I'm still finishing my undergraduate, this is my last semester.  I decided to take a year off and work in a friend-of-a-friend's toxicology lab before I head to grad school.  I want some more research under my belt and I'm really interested in toxicology, plus I'm kind of burned out on school at the moment so a year off might do me some good.

As for things making your pee smell funky, there are a couple of things at work here.  First is the level of hydration in your body.  If you are not taking in adequate fluids, your urine is less diluted and any odiferous molecules in your urine will be more noticeable.  Second, any molecules that your body is unable to break down or use in various biochemical processes are going to be sent to the kidneys and excreted in the urine.  If the molecules hasn't undergone any significant oxidation or other chemical change by the liver and is somewhat aromatic, you're going to smell it in your urine and possibly your feces.  For instance your parrot bay foo-foo drink...whatever organic chemical they flavor/scent it with is unable to be metabolized by your body and is subsequently released in your waste.  Everyone's a little different and minor mutations may make you able to metabolize (or at least oxidize into different form) something that someone else cannot.
