Title: Lake Nicaragua

This was sent in by a Naked Scientists visitor a few weeks ago. We are stumped...

Question:  A body of water, which is neither an ocean, a sea, a gulf, nor saltwater, is home to swordfish, stingrays, sharks, and tarpon.

The size of the body of water is 140 miles by 40 miles.  What is the name of the body of water?

Anybody know the answer ?

The answer is Lake Nicaragua.  It used to be part of the Caribbean Sea, and some of its occupants were able to adapt when it was closed off and became a fresh water lake.

Wow, thanks - I knew nothing about this. To be honest when someone sent me the question I thought they were pulling my leg. Have you got any good links or references about it ?

The information I have on Lake Nicaragua comes from Old fashioned paper encyclopedias.  I just did a quick search on the name, and a couple of on-line encyclopedias came up, if that's any help.

There are some great sites for this lake. The one here seems very technical but there are some gorgeous photos of it as well. I think I have found a vacation spot!
