Title: How long are dog years compared to human years?

Is a dog year equivalent to 1 human year, and why?

It used to be said that 1 human year is equivalent to 7 doggie years. To calculate it, take the average lifespan of a human (in the Western world) and divide it by the average lifespan of a dog. It used to work out to about 1:7. The average lifespan of a dog was 12 years. 12x7=84, which was roughly the average lifespan of a human.

However, dogs are living longer these days and I think it should be nearer to 6 doggie years = 1 human year.

As with humans, there is a lot of variety in the lifespans of doggies. Smaller dogs tend to live longer than large dogs. For instance, it's unusual to get something like a German Shepherd or Rottie living more than about 12 years, whereas Yorkies or Jack Russels regularly reach 16 years or more. Giant breeds (such as Great Danes, St Bernards, Mastiffs, etc.) normally only live 9-10 years; although I had an English Mastiff who reach almost 16 years.

When asked the secret of its longevity, one 15-year-old Rottweiller put it down to eating a postman every day.
