Title: why does the kettle turn itself off when it was not even on?

Why is it that late at night when it's nice and quiet i can hear the switch on my kettle turn itself off, when it was not even turned off? what's going on?

The colder temperature (night) has caused the bimetallic strip in the kettle's thermostat to flex, producing a click.

Or sleep-walking and you might have turned the kettle on without being fully aware of having done so. Just being hypothetical there

My kettle also does this, and I'm not a somnambulist nor amnesiac.
