Why is it that late at night when it's nice and quiet i can hear the switch on my kettle turn itself off, when it was not even turned off? what's going on?

Why is it that late at night when it's nice and quiet i can hear the switch on my kettle turn itself off, when it was not even turned off? what's going on?
The colder temperature (night) has caused the bimetallic strip in the kettle's thermostat to flex, producing a click.

My kettle also does this, and I'm not a somnambulist nor amnesiac.
