I am looking for many opinions here:
Who, at the moment, is the most important group of professionals to help the human species to survive on this planet?

Environmentalists or politicians?

Those working on biological warfare could accidentally or deliberately reduce the human population drastically
and consequently increase its long term survival, (e.g. by reducing anthropogenic global warming).

The answer is ME! Me, me, me me and thrise me!
Education of the young on global issues, their effect on the whole word and how they personally can make a difference, is the only way to save the planet! Guess who is doing that as we type! You got it, ME.
If I don't manage to save the planet then I'll be the first to escape as I am building a rocket in my garage. Could someone please warn me if they are going to send a super virus in this direction so that I know when the launch deadline is. Thanky.

Hmmmn, sounds suspiciously similar to a platicine based cartoon....Did you pack the crackers?
I doubt very much that there is a single classification that can do it all. I hate to say it, but I think that the politicians are really the only ones with enough power to be able to make any sort of changes. Yes, scientists will be able to find all the stuff out, but they stand little chance of actually getting it into the public arena. Or, perhaps there is one man! Obama could well be the most important person in the human history of the world.

Who votes politicians in? We do! If we want the world saving we have to vote for the people that will do it. We have to lobby and campaign to make sure they see it through and we have to kick them out if they are not.

The media gives people what they want so if we let them know we want the world saving you will suddenly see lots of programs about it and article about it.
The world can be saved but it wont be if we are all too apathetic to do anything about it. Never mind which profession. This is why I said ME! Perhaps I should have said Me and you and you and you and hey you there at the back. The one pointing at his friend and hoping he can slope off for a fag and a game of Guitar Heros. Yes you too.

I thought engineers would be important. The people who will create the technical solutions once the decision to do it has been made. Of course that is assuming that political will exists, funds are available, a technical solution is appropriate, and our education system is able to encourage young people to consider those professions.
I asked over 100 students a few months ago what their dream job would be. Over 10% professional athletes. One city engineer. One scientist. 6 vets. One president. A few computer specialists, lawyers, business men and women, teachers. Art and entertainment were big too. A mirror of our society in the US? Can that work?
