Title: x rays, are there any rays of other letters?
Post by: paul.fr on 18/08/2007 23:01:18
We have all heard of x rays, but what about y, z or even a rays! Do any of these exist? If they do then:

1. what are they
2. Did they start with the letter a - for a rays, if not why not?

Röntgen referred to the radiation as "X", to indicate that it was an unknown type of radiation. The name stuck, although (over Röntgen's great objections), many of his colleagues suggested calling them Röntgen rays. They are still referred to as such in many languages.

Nothing A to W or Y or Z, just X for the "unknown rays".

Begging your pardon, sir, but there are other rays named after a letter in the alphabet. It just isn't the English alphabet.

I give you Γ or γ-Rays.

As for the reason - Too many Greek teachers in English public schools.

For a while there were "N rays"

but they turned out to be a mistake.

At the beginning of radioactive era, there were other two kinds of rays: α rays and β rays. Then it was discovered that α rays were helium nuclei and that β rays were electrons.

About "a new kind of rays", a know a joke, but I don't know if I can translate it effectively into english:

At a sexology congress, an american lecturer announce:
"After three years of study with x-rays, we can now guarantee to men a continued erection for one month!"
People, very happy, clap and say: "bravo".

Then comes a second, german, lecturer:
"We have conducted deep studies for 4 years on γ-rays, and we are happy to announce that we can guarantee to men a continued erection for 6 months!"
People, much more happy, clap and say: "bravo", "bravo", "bravo".

Then the last lecturer, italian, from Naples:
"Actually, from an entire life experience on a particular kind of rays, we can guarantee to men a permanent erection, for all life!".
People: "Ohhh! Bravo!, Bravo!, Bravo!" Huge acclaimation and standing ovation.
Then a person ask: "But, tell us, what kind of rays did you use?" And the lecturer: "Rays...of bycycle".
Edit: in english the correct term is "spoke", so I don't know if the term "ray" gives the idea the same.

Have you ever wondered why people stand in lines?  Could there be some mysterious lines of force (which I name Q-rays), generated from deep within the earth, that drive us to stand one behind the other, often for hours and/or hundreds of meters?
Q-rays are especially powerful at certain points on the earth's surface, such as airports, sporting events, governmental offices and women's restrooms (perhaps these are Q-nodes?).  Not sure of the significance of Q-rays, but there must be some good research possibilities.
