New Theories / New theory of modern science
« on: 09/06/2021 22:34:50 »
Who cares what Einstein said?  He was just a "theorist". There've been loads of such "theorists" in the past.

Such as Aristotle in Ancient Greece.  He claimed that the Earth was at the centre of the Universe, which consisted of four "elements": Earth, Air, Fire and Water.  Plus a Fifth element, the "Quintessence" which was responsible for making stars and planets glow, and revolve in perfect circles.

This was all complete cobblers, and set back the progress of Astronomy, Physics and Science generally, for 1,500 years.

Until practical scientists like Galileo, Boyle and Cavendish, blew the nonsense away.

They showed that theoreticians are not to be trusted.  What  counts in Science is factual evidence.  Not some deranged theorising.

Unfortunately, modern science is becoming more and more deranged by absurd ideas like "Black Holes" "Wormholes", "Higgs Bosons", and the entire Universe having sprung from a particle smaller than a pea.

Hopefully, this will be put right soon!

New Theories / Re: Could the core of a body have repulsive gravity?
« on: 30/05/2021 17:48:43 »
Is it wise to appeal to Newton's "shell theory"?  Newton was a 17th century scientist. He was undoubtedly a genius.

But he didn't have access to the knowledge we have in the  21st century.  Such knowledge includes the existence of the "Strong Force" which operates between the protons in the nucleus of atoms.

Isn't this "Strong Force" a "repulsive" one,  which lets protons overcome the inner force of Gravity.
And so remain as individual particles. Instead of being crushed together by Gravity into a homogenous lump.

Newton didn't know anything about this. His theory dealt only with the outer "attractive" effects of matter on a large scale. Such as between big bodies, like planets. He knew nothing about atoms, and their inner workings.

So why rely on Newton when asking questions about a possible repulsive force at the core of a body?

That CAN'T be true! / I don’t understand physics: does anyone understand physics these days?

It's a polite way of saying Philip Ball doesn't understand it.
Phillip Ball did understand it and proceeded to offer his own explanation which I thought joined the category of 'not at all easy to follow'.
Does anyone understand Physics these days.  Hasn't it become a kind of fantasy subject, filled with speculations about Black Holes, multi-dimensional wormholes, Gravity Waves revealed by wiggles on pre-filled in graphs, the so-called "Higg's Boson" supposedly found by electronic detectors  -without leaving any trace in Bubble Chambers.

Doesn't  present-day "Physics" increasingly resemble a mathematical construct, divorced from  physical reality.

This is the tragedy.  Physics has ceased to explain how the Universe works.  It just says, in the famous words, "Shut up and calculate".  Who doesn't find this deplorable?
