I have a post Xmas question that goes annually unanswered, but I'm confident that one of you can help me. I am seconds away from finally getting rid of my christmas tree and every year it seems such a waste to simply cop up into bits this tree that I've been watering and keeping healthy (despite, of course, it's decapitation before it's employ at our home for the holidays).
My question is this; Can I graft this tree onto another? No, not just a branch. I'm not sentimental about this tree in particular whereby I feel some sort of urge to protect a meager branch. My ambitions are more pragmatic. Can I graft this whole tree at its stump onto one of the many available would-be stumps of the elm in my back yard?Â

No. It is possible to graft tree to tree, but it is difficult and the "guest" and the "host" most be extremely closely related. I have grafted apple-apple, and have tried plum-plum (no success on that one), but I only have had success if the graft is one year old or less, if it was cut and grafted almost immediately, and if the plants are very closely related.

I have an plum-cot tree! Its plum tree that has been grafted to an Apricot tree. The fruit is delicious but it has taken years for it to finally start fruiting, this is about its 5th year of fruiting.. and it took more then 15 years to get there, and the fruit is good. The problem having been so far is the wind.. the blooms seem to take longer to set and seem more susceptible to the early spring winds, when compared to that of, say for instance, my apple tree, or the neighbors plum...

Grafting evergreens can be very difficult and unless you are well praticed in this horticulture, I doubt you would have much success.
Also, your tree has been long cut from it's root. Grafting, to be successful, should be done as soon as possible after the tree has been cut from the root.
It would be a far better plan to buy a pot grown tree next year.

I missed that bit.
Not a chance. You could only graft to another evergreen.
As a sheepy I am of course an expert in tree grafting !
