Hi
I have made a try at converting the forum onto some new software. I would like to test whether it will understand the passwords properly. My problem is that I wasn't registered when the database dump was made so I can't test it.
If anyone was registered in December 2004 and would like to try logging in I would appreciate knowing whether it works.

Ok...just tried again with all manner of previous login derivatives (whether this would have any effect at all I do not know) ..but it still won't log me in............It looks great though.....but where's all the current posts ?.....

nope..still not happy...boo hoo !!...tried a few more....ho hum !...now I'm logged out for trying too many times !..we need some oldies...but goodies [:)]...what about Chris...I believe he was a member then !![:D]

Cheers neil, I thought that may be the case... I will keep playing. If yours doesn't work chris' probably won't either, it is probably my fault.
The reason that the newer posts aren't there is that it is based on an old database backup - which has the advantage that it has a third of as many posts so only takes 4 hours to convert... when I convert it properly rest assured the more recent ones will be there.

Out of interest, how sure are you of your old password neil? there is definitely a neilep user back then.

Yep..and that was me...I will try again..but I am sure I have been using the correct old password ..I'll try again..is it case sensitive ?...nit that I think it will matter...

When you say logged out does it say 'incorrect password' or something else?

...No..it says I've had too many attempts to log in and that I should try again later..but it doesn't say how long to wait before trying again..

Probably not nearly as much hair as I will have pulled out by the time I get the passwords to work.

I'll keep trying sporadically Dave...hang on !! (20 seconds later)...sorry !!..still no joy !...
JUST IN CASE I am having a major case of brain fatigue perhaps Chris should have a go...I presume his password has never changed whereas mine has..though..I am sure Dave I am using all the passwords I have ever known !!...and it's only the two on this site !

don't worry neil, if it doesn't work now it probably won't in the near future, I will tell you if I change anything I will tell you. Chris is away for a week so I may have to be patient.
Is there anyone else who has been around that long?

well yes there are but they don't frequent the site anymore...I think I scared them all away !!.....and the one person I do know does not have internet access right now....

cheers, I have now worked out why it wasn't working... the password hashing function was not installed, I am trying to get the server admins to install it, or find a workaround. I will tell you when and if I manage

Ok it 'may' work now, I have hacked in a php version of the hashing function, could you give it another go?

dave, can you see if my username was any diferent in those days ?..I think a few changes were made not just to my password but also my username...it may be why I am having no succes.

Ok, for the 245th time... i have now found the brackets I should have put in my hack.. It is now doing what I think it should, I however whether this is the right thing is another question. One more try?

Dave, how does the conversion work ?...do you not just import everything in one fell swoop ?...does THIS site have to be ' down ' to be able to transfer all the posty goodness ?

Basically I copy the Access database, convert it to a mysql database, then run it through a somewhat slow script (which took about 4 hours on 1/3 of the posts we have now) and then dump the database into the new forum. This doesn't necessarily need this site to be down, but I will probably turn it off over night (with warning) as otherwise we will loose any posts made between me taking the Access database and converting to the new site. I could try and do some clever stuff which would update things with recent posts, but the odds of things going wrong will be increased...

looks like you got everything sorted out, but i'll just add my 2 cents that i got in as well.
