Addressing only overland river ways.
A collection of water from a constant source from an upper elevation, finding its own level to flow to a lower elevation ultimately to sea level that is driven by gravity.

water follows the path of least resistance, and then more water follows it, "cutting" a path all the way to the next puddle of water
