Title: What are the most striking images from your youth?
Post by: Geezer on 06/02/2011 04:40:10
I know a lot of old farts like JimBob frequent TNS, so I thought those of his vintage might like to compare and contrast how much things have changed during our his lifetime.

For example, I can remember when it took a minimum of two days to drive from Glasgow to Dover, and I'm not anywhere near as old as JimBob.

I remember when gasoline was .35cents a gallon, and when they skyrocketed to .50 cents a gallon!

That's a good one Karen.

I can remember when it was possible to bugger about tour the countryside on our bikes for an entire day without our parents being concerned for our safety.

When I quit smoking cigarettes, I was outraged at the price of 75 cents per pack. If Geezer smoked, I bet he complained about paying a nickel per pack.

I can remember when you still had a corner store, milk came in a bottle delivered to the door ( and had a full head of cream on it too), bread was delivered, the vegetable truck came twice a week, sweets were 2 for a half cent, and many more.

I can rememer when there were only two cars on the street where I grew up, and horses and carts were not unusual at all. There was even a Tardis down the road a bit.

Sitting under the ceiling fan on the porch at home in Atlanta in July, not knowing it was hot until one of the neighbors got that newfangled invention (air conditioning) installed in their home.  We just rolled the windows down when we were lucky enough to ride in a car.

It must have been a tough decision...

Or just keep the old horse.

Did you head to the Telegraph Station to send messages too?

Unfortunately I can't quite remember the "record snow" in the area, about 3 feet in 1969, although my brother can remember shovelling off the flat roof, then making a snow fort.

However, in the early 70's we had some really really cold weather for two winters in a row....  perhaps -10°F for several weeks.  We had a (very) small pond at that time.  So, once my parents were sure it was good and solid, we went down there, shovelled off the snow, and went ice skating.  My skates were these little double-blade clamp-on skates that we had borrowed from the neighbors.

I had great plans of flooding the baseball diamond at school...  if it got that cold the following year [::)], but unfortunately it didn't.   [:(]

Jeez you guys sound like a bad monty python sketch.   You know that when I were a lad, comedy sketches were proper comedy sketches, and we got up 2 hours before we went to bed....

We had a party line too. You were not supposed to know who the other party was, but they hooked us up with our next door neighbour! We always knew when she picked up the phone too, because the bell on our phone would tinkle a bit.

BTW, I understand Matthew lived in carboard box int' middle of road.

I think my youth could be summed up in 90s toy commercials - skip-its, betty spaghetti dolls, dream phone, ferbie, tamogatchis. Or 90s tv shows. I still love when Saved By the Bell comes on when I am getting ready for work at 6am. There is something so wonderful about the poofed bangs and high tops. To me, the 90s will never go out of style.

OK, I'll come clean. (Pun intentional)

I can remember a tin bath in front of the fire every Sunday.

The day 'Nobby', the milkman, first came in an electric milk float because his horse had died.

My Dad getting his first car; a Morris Oxford Traveller. You had to thump the door posts when turning, because the indicator arm's frequently got stuck.

My first Corgi toy; an Austin A40. Not a word of a lie, playing with it in the street one day, it was run over by an Austin A40!

The shellfish man coming around on his tricycle on Sunday afternoons.

I can rememer when ......

When 'remember' had a 'b' in it!!!!(https://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fbestsmileys.com%2Flol%2F4.gif&hash=dc0017defb1737ae43c0ff6efcb35b2a)

Ah, but did you get "onion men" riding up and down the street on bicyles that were festooned with strings of onions?

The toothless old farmer in Georgia who shot me with a load of rock salt!  All over a couple of measly watermelons. [^]

Shehit! I bet that got your attention  [:D]

That reminds me of an occasion when one of my pals and I thought it would be a brilliant idea to lob a couple lit "penny bangers" (firecrackers) on to the back of a British Railways Scammel articulated delivery flatbed truck, just as it was setting off.

We learned a valuable lesson in physics. The tractor on a Scammel was a three wheeler. Consequently, it has a remarkably small turning circle.

On hearing the explosions behind him, the driver executed a flawless U-turn, and was all over us before there was any hope of escape!

Ah! You mean the continental chappy with the stripe jersey and beret with a thick moustache? (Have you ever seen a stripe beret, or a beret with a moustache?)

The one who made sounds like "Haw haw he haw" and such like and smoked a strange cigarette which had a hint of camel dung in its aroma?

The one who trundled up the road calling out (in a strange accent) "On eee ons, gharrrleeck, shareloots".

The one who mumbled under his breath "bluudy eengleesh, veev la Frahnce, veev de goal" and other strange chants I could never understand?

The one who ponged to high heaven?

Is that the chap you mean?

No, I don't remember him!
