Post by: Seany on 16/06/2007 22:45:50
How do these new contact lenses work? I forgot what they were called... i read in on the newspaper a while back. They sound cool!

Yup.. That's because the contacts get dry when you sleep..... However, these new contacts are shaped differently

Are these the ones of which you speak!

My imformation was taken from a website "TEXAS STATE OPTICAL LUFKIN"

FDA Approves 30-Night Continuous Wear Contact Lenses
The FDA approved Focus Night and Day soft contact lenses, made by CIBA Vision Corporation, for up to 30 nights of continuous wear. The lenses may be left in the eyes while the wearer is both awake and asleep. Currently contact lenses are approved for up to seven days extended. Click here for more info: http://www.fda.gov/cdrh/newpg.html

New Extended Wear Contact Lens Material Reduces Infection Risk

A new extended wear soft contact lens material called silicone hydrogel may lower the risk of infections associated with their use than the traditional extended-wear lens materials. The US Food and Drug Administration recently approved two contact lens manufacturers to market silicone hydrogel lenses for 30-day extended wear soft contact lenses.

``The new material makes for a safer contact lens compared to anything else out there,'' said lead investigator Dr. H. Dwight Cavanagh, of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, in an interview with Reuters Health.

Cavanagh noted that the new contact lenses should reduce risk of infection by about 10-fold. The risk should drop from 1 infection per 2,500 people who use daily-wear lenses and 1 in 500 for extended-wear lenses, to 1 in 25,000 and 1 in 5,000, respectively.

The success of the new material lies in its ability to let in about 6 to 7 times more oxygen than traditional contact lenses, Cavanagh explained.

Er... No.. I think those lenses are ones where you can wear it whilst you sleep and awake, so that it's basically like you live with them on.

The ones I was thinking of was the ones where you wear them when you sleep, and you take it off in the morning. And you can see perfect.

To do that they would need to reshape your eyes while you slept. I'm not saying that's impossible but I wouldn't trust it.
(and by the way, perfect is an adjective; the corresponding adverb is perfectly)

Next Gen Contact Lenses During Night Only

The concept of OrthoKeratology dates back to ancient China where it was discovered that sleeping with small bags of sand on your eyes improved your vision the following day.

OrthoKeratology (Ortho-K) is a non-surgical process which reshapes (flattens) the cornea of the eye using custom made contact lenses during the night to reduce refractive errors (nearsightedness and astigmatism). The patient would take the lenses out in the morning and they are able to see the rest of the day without any glasses or contact lenses.

Accelerated Ortho-K uses reverse geometry contact lenses. Flattening the cornea reduces the focusing power of the eye. If the amount of corneal flattening is accurately controlled, it is possible to bring the eye into correct focus and compensate for myopia (nearsightedness). After the contact lens is removed, the cornea retains its flattened shape for part or all of the remainder of the day. A retainer lens must be used each night to maintain the corneal flattening, or the myopia will revert to the pre-treatment level. Ortho-K is also successful for some degrees of farsightness by steepening the central cornea.

If you need a retainer lens. I would have thought that your vision may get worse over the day. It is almost certainly only usable for very small optical corrections, although arguably less nasty than laser eye surgery.

Nono.. You don't just wear it once.. You wear it everyday at night but remove it in the morning, and you can see fine for the day.

LOL surely that's gotta be bad.. And isn't it like a monthly lens??
I can't be bothered to wear contacts.. Too tedious work everyday
