American pre war wirless magazines mentioned "Air cell "A" (filiment heating) batteries; what were their components ?

There is a most interesting discussion about Zinc-Air batteries (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zinc-air_battery), that oxidize Zinc as part of the generation of power.
